Just retrieved this from yesterday. Olive, thank you! I'd completely forgotten about going to the carrier itself - stupid, as thats Virgin, bii-ii-iig company! Anyway, I'm trying for the 29th December, and their schedule only goes up to the 15th December. Boom Boom, as the saying goes. Thanks!
You aren't even restricted to the carrier's website either... I used First Great Western's (??) website to book a Virgin train as FGW had a £5 off voucher last time I needed to book! :rotfl: (To confuse things further it turned up in a trainline envelope despite me not using trainline:rotfl:)
The return leg I booked on the National Express East Coast website for one of their trains as at the time I got ~33% off for the date I wanted to travel back!
I got a £1 Citylink (bus) fare Edinburgh to Glasgow (to meet my friend for lunch) then train Glasgow to London then train London to Edinburgh all for under £30! :j :j
Have a look here for curent offers, here for possibly cheap ticket release dates and tips for cheap fares, and here for advice/to ask questions about when your tickets may be bookable / other codes etc.Mortgage free as of 12/08/20!

That's one of the more endearing habits of the train carriers:rolleyes: wait for the time of year when lots of people need to be somewhere else and then make sure they can't get advance tickets.
And then schedule maintenance work so they don't have to compensate commuters:mad:
Oh, and wonder why people prefer to go by car...:rotfl:‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ David Lynch.

Good grief, there's whole *sections* of this website I've just never got to grips with. I've just had a happy ten minutes mucking about with megatrain, tfl and oystercard.
I haven't checked for 29 December yet, but what really stands out is that I could do my fortnightly train journey to London a *lot* cheaper. I need to go up this Saturday too, for work, so I'll experiment with that - its not a great deal, but its still a saving.
Right, off to look at December now. For the outward journey, I could go up on 22 December (I'd usually go 23rd, but it doesn't get to Liverpool till 7.30, which cuts out a whole day there) for £1!!! By bus, admittedly, but its not a long trip to Liverpool, not nowadays. I'm really tempted.
EDIT - shortbird, I feel your pain as my own - in fact, it is my own!
Sorry for the hijack, Hypno, but this is serious stuff :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

:rotfl: I only found out there were travel boards, uk and international travel boards a couple of months ago when trying to make my London trip cheaper and price up something for next year...
Hypno - did you get a refund from Orange Broadband for a part month broadband after you transferred? I just realised they sent me a "give us your correct details or charges" email and phoned up to [STRIKE]rant[/STRIKE] grump at them that i cancelled my Direct just over the 30 days after the switch (as per the T&Cs) and there was no further payment due. I felt very sheepish when I was told I am due a £10 odd refund!:rotfl: Apparently it'll now arrive around the 2nd week of Oct!
