Amazon Prime Member Fee? Charged £48...

On 15th January 2009, I had my visa card statement to find £47.97 taken from my account for 'prime member fee'. Like some others on here I hadn't a clue what it was for, so I did a google search and was directed to this forum, when it became clear. I checked Amazons site and there it was I was a prime member! I bought a book as an Christmas present on 15th December 2008, and in order to get it in time for Christmas, I paid extra for 'express delivery', not knowing I was actually subscribing to become a 'prime member'. Like many others on here, I am normally 'switched on' to these sort of things and would not normally be taken in so lightly, so I do believe that although Amazon have not done anything wrong, I do not believe the system and safeguards are adequately explained. The result being I telephoned Amazon and they were as good as gold, and knew exactly why I had phoned them before I had even finished explaining! They were most helpful and polite and returned my money within two days it was back in my account. The customer service chap I spoke to, did say that they get these queries/complaints, every day!0

Hi there, I too have been charged £47+ fr this facility either trough ignorance or by a (and typically) a box that needs unticking. a simple phone call to Amazon on 0800 496 1081 should resolve your pridicament and get your money back within 3 banking days. It worked for me.

Not true - the box for amazon prime is not ticked by default. You ticked it yourself and didn't read what it was for.0 -
Shop at Amazon all the time and coming up to Xmas noticed the thing for Prime clicked it and stuff came next day. It was all clear and I knew that if I did not cancel money would be taken from my account. Now imagine my horror when the money actually was taken from my bank... cause I yes me not Amazon forgot to cancel, my fault and yet when I phoned to explain they gave me a full refund as I had not used the service, good on Amazon, and Bad on my forgetfulness0

I'm not sure how so many people feel they have been conned into signing up to something they didn't know about, I bought something just over a month ago and there was a box to check to sign up to Prime Member, I read through the terms and saw there was an option I could select before signing up that would automatically end the sercive after the one month trial, meaning I would pay nothing. I remember thinking it was unusal for there to be a setting to NOT automatically renew after the trial.
When the trial ended I was not charged anything. I thought it was rather good of them to be honest, I got a free next day delivery out of it.0 -

I think many people click on 'buy' without reading what that entails and then yell 'SCAM! RIP-OFF! CON!'
You were obviously intelligent or savvy enough to read what you were signing up for.
From what I've read on here from those people who didn't do that and have still been refunded - Amazon are being pretty reasonable about it.0 -
I also managed to stupidly get charged for this service, my own fault really although in my defence the day after the goods arrived I went into my account to cancel the service and I got a message saying You are not currently subscribed to Amazon Prime. Click here to sign up, I assumed my account hadn't been updated and would go back later to check up and cancel. But my mind decided to forget and only got reminded with the debit from my account.
Called them up and they've refunded the money, which is great. There's no con or scam from where I'm standing, just my bad memory.0 -
thank god I noticed this thanks everyone! I logged onto my amazon account as soon as I read this and they was going to automatically upgrade on the 25th of march! So i've cancelled it!
Thankyou!!
