Thank you for everyone who posted here. I saw the charge on my credit card and couldn't remember what it was for. Typed it into google and moneysaving expert forum came up. I have sent Amazon an email and within the hour had a response that they would refund the total amount to my credit card. I will check next month to make sure - no problems, really easy.:T

  • Just to add to this - my girlfriend bought some presents for christmas from Amazon on our joint account. When checking the statement this month we noticed the £47.97 fee (it has gone down due to the VAT change) and found the solution on this site.

If you sign in to your Amazon account it is possible to cancel the membership online providing you haven't already made a purchase using the prime member service (as previously stated). Just go to your account summary, and near the bottom is the prime membership section, go into there and it will give you the option to cancel. We did, and the refund has just come through in full (thankfully - it means I can now put another tank of fuel in my Corrado!) :)

Thanks again to this site for the help, and also I think praise should go to Amazon for making it so easy for people to opt out of the service.

I do think amazon resolve problems like this fairly quickly. When compared to other online stores, they are the best, you always know that nothing dodgy will occur. signature_.jpgsignature_coldplay.jpg
  • Thanks to all those that have posted about this as I wouldn't have known where the 40 odd quid was going from my bank account. I haven't used amazon often but I have found them very good, especially this last xmas as I was laid up ill and unable to go out for xmas bargains, but the prime membership was marketed as a free offer and wasn't clear on the 30 day trial and then get charged clause. I do feel that they were taking advantage. I hope that I have as good a respone from Amazon as otheres have in the full light of this membership service.
  • The fact is... amazon.co.uk have deliberately made it difficult to understand what you are signing up to... the free trial is not a FREE trial.. its a simple method of tricking you into ticking a checkbox making you liable for £48 every year. Even the fact there is no mention of Amazon.co.uk on your statement is another way of hiding their fee. I almost complained to my bank thinking my card had been used fraudulently online but fortunately googled it first. I feel let down by amazon for tricking me into this. Hopefully they will refund. This is clearly an idea from some hot-shot marketing guy who has guaranteed to make them a bumper end of year bonus out of their customers who doesnt care about the long-term reputation of amazon.

Of course its a free trial it costs you nothing , therefore its free

If you read all the terms before you signed up then you would have understood you can cancell at anytime in the 30 days.
  • It is a FREE trial, in that they give you a month for free. Then they start billing you for the service, as they do after all trials unless you cancel! Everyone who thinks they were "stung" must have ticked the box to sign up. I've ordered things from amazon recently and have not signed up to prime, and therefore have not been charged. It is that simple.

I totally agree with you on this one.

There's far too many people who click on 'buy' without reading the T&Cs and then post that they've been 'RIPPED OFF' when actually they haven't been at all.

I've bought lots of stuff from Amazon and (touch wood) have had excellent service, I always use the free delivery option.
I've looked at the Amazon Prime offer and decided it wasn't worth it, even for the free trial.

It's nice to hear that Amazon are being good about refunding people who forget to cancel after the free trial period has run out.
