Amazon Prime Member Fee? Charged £48...

  • I have just seen a charge of £47.97 on my account and have been advised it was from Amazon.

I actually saw the offer on their website and was not at all interested as I do not order goods regularly enough to warrant a £50.00 fee.

Now, being the very careful internet shopper that I am I have the capability of checking back via keystrokes history to see what I have and have not agreed to.

At no time during my ordering in December 2008 did I click to opt in or agree to any kind of Prime Membership.

I have cancelled my card and informed the fraud department of my bank who in turn will be contacting the police.

I have also emailed Amazon to tell them what I have done.

Considering the financial mess this country is in and the nightmare that many people are finding themselves in I am disgusted that Amazon are yet another internet retailer being underhanded in this way.

Suffite it to say, they will not be receiving anymore orders from me.

Those people who have not been charged - show a bit of sympathy to those who have been scammed or "accidently" agreed to this. Smugness is an ugly trait.

You have to choose and accept Prime. Amazon don't do it for you!

When you placed your order, did you get free shipping?

I suggest you all look at your order history/invoices and see what you were charged for postage.

If you didn't pay for postage, then obviously you have checked or not unchecked something to do with Prime.

  • This has just happened to me as well and not only did I not CHOOSE to accept Prime membership (by accident or otherwise), I still don't have Prime membership! My husband has a Prime account and I can get free delivery as one of his invited household members but nowhere does it say that I ever signed up for it myself. The card the membership fee was charged to was a different card from the one I get free delivery on so I can tell the difference. The one time I used the card that Amazon charged the fee to I didn't even get free delivery. So now tell me this isn't a total scam in some way.

Also, even if it was legit, a)why wouldn't they send you an email saying you had registered - they send you an email for every other thing and b)why is it so hard to identify where the fee came from on your bank statement. As others have said, my bank had no idea, I only figured it out by googling adn finding this site. It is a scam and I am going to report it to amazon and my bank's fraud department.

Let us know how you get on with Amazon & your bank.
  • Nevermind, turns out Amazon used my card to renew my husband's Prime account because his other card had expired. Oops, glad I couldn't phone to complain until Monday. I still think however that Amazon need to be much more transparent about this whole process by sending confirmation emails and listing themselves as Amazon on the card statements. My husband didn't even realize all this had happened until I told him about the charge on my card.

I'm not sure that I'd be happy about this at all - if they did it without asking your permission first.

What if you'd got a 0% balance transfer on YOUR card and you'd put it away so as not to use it during that 0% period?
What if that transaction had taken you over your limit?

I signed up for the trial when I ordered something in December. It took longer than normal to arrive. I was unable to track the item as it had been sent First Class post. It took a week to arrive. Not the service I had expected and not the sort of service I am prepared to pay for and so I cancelled through the website.
