  • Just rang 08004961081 and was put through to what seemed the US call center (all messages etc were in an American accent, as was operator), he refunded this charge no questions asked - I did cancel almost straight away after placing the order but it hadn't done so on their system but he admitted they'd had problems their end with this. So all being well should be sorted in 2-3 days apparently.

you get a month so no need to cancel straight away
  • Without wishing to state the obvious to all those 'Amazon is great - how could you not realise you had to opt out' clearly it is not the case or this thread would not exist!

Its about time uk law banned these 'opt out if you don't wish to continue' schemes. If people really want the service / product then they are quite capable of opting in!

Maybe I would feel a slight bit better had the service worked, but the order I placed on this 'free trial' never arrived (a gift for Xmas) and they would not resend in time for Xmas in case it arrived within 10 days. The order was, needless to say, cancelled.

I will stick to www.find-dvd.co.uk from now on, as in all instances so far they find the goods cheaper than Amazon, I haven't been hit with a £49 delivery charge on any of them (most are post free), and they all arrived.

By ticking the box to join the Prime free trial you are opting in, if you didnt want to opt in you dont tick the box and either choose to pay for the delivery or choose have the items delivered for free (assuming they come under the free delivery categories).

By virtue of the fact you signed up you should also realise you need to opt out if you dont want to continue the deal.

    Absolutely correct, scubaangel.

I've been ofered a free trial of Amazon Prime quite a few times, but I've never opted in, so I've never had to opt out.

And, DanLondonN1, the reason that threads such as these exist is because people DON'T read the T&Cs.

Not to mention if you go to the Prime member area it tells you the date on which you have to cancel membership so that you dont get charged at the end of the free trial!

I signed up for it myself last week as I was ordering a fairly expensive item and wanted it asap, so have been checking exactly what I would have to do to make sure I dont get charged, they really do make it about as idiot proof as humanly possible, email giving you the details of the offer (start and end dates for your trial) and a link to you Prime member area, which has a big button which is labelled cancel Prime membership. It really couldnt be easier, and this is without having read the details simply the email I was sent when I placed my order!!

If they didnt make it so easy then I would say there is an arguement to say they are being unfair/underhand, but they do, so at the risk of being harsh its your own fault if you get charged and dont want to pay for it.

It's an opt in rather than an opt out button. As I said before, I didn't click on the free trial button, and so didn't sign up to Amazon Prime.

  • I too had a shock when checking my account online and discovering £49.97 had been debited without my knowledge. I agree with other users on here its not clear who the charge has been made by and I think Amazon should address this. I rang my bank and they helpfully managed to clarify that it related to Amazon but I wonder how many calls Banks are receiving about this!
Its so long ago I can't recall for definite if I signed up for JUST the 1 month trial. Think I did, but is there any way of proving this??? My last purchase was 17th Dec so a month on makes it 17th Jan when I was out the country without PC access therefore how could I have cancelled this so it didn't renew?? Have cancelled it via Amazon but unclear as to whether my account will be credited. Only time will tell!

You dont 'just' sign up for the month trial, you sign up for the service but get given the first month for free!
If you didnt want it to carry on beyond the free month you should have cancelled before you left the country. People getting refunds have been getting in touch with Amazon customer services to ensure they get a full refund.
