Called them up and they've refunded the money, which is great. There's no con or scam from where I'm standing, just my bad memory. :o

It also seems that if you haven't used the facility after using it with the original order, then you are deemed to have not taken advantage of the offer and thus qualify for a refund.

  • It is a con. My wife got bitten by this scam. They deliberately make it not obvious that you will be charged if you don't cancel.

And the really cheeky (in my opinion dishonest) thing is that the line that appears on the credit card bill doesn't mention Amazon at all, it just says "Prime Member Fee". This means that many people won't remember what it is for and won't have the opportunity to cancel.

Should this be reported to the OFT?

Deliberately make it not obvious? You mean after the line which says FREE ONE MONTH TRIAL where it says the 12 month subscription costs £49??

What other free trial doesnt automatically roll over to the paying service at the end of the trial? The LoveFILM type ones all do, why shouldnt the amazon one?

It says 'Prime Member Fee' because that is what it is - pretty simple and easy to understand, plus they only get a certain amount of space in the reference box.

Why report it to the OFT? The terms are simple and clear if you bother to read them before ticking the box to take advantage of the offer, or even after ticking it when the amazon header turns in to 'Amazon Prime' on every page you view on site, when you can click it and view the terms and even cancel the offer!

Yup youre right amazon prime is a complete and utter scam, bad naughty amazon giving you free next day delivery on any order for a month then asking you to pay £50 in advance for the next 12 months next day delivery with no extra delivery costs!

Maybe you should rethink this statement......
  • Received a credit card statement today and noted Prime Member deduction and traced it to Amazon through MSE.com. Why wasn't it shown as Amazon?
I have ordered many items from Amazon over the last couple of years always using the 3/5 days free delivery service (or the supplier's delivery period/charge if applicable) but this has suddenly appeared following a purchase of a couple of CDs last month.
Like jimmy610 (17-10-2008) I am very particular in checking (unchecking) boxes which may involve me in receiving c**p mail, information or extra charges etc and certainly cannot recall accepting Prime Member membership. Certainly not to pay £47 for £10 of CDs !!
Spoke to Amazon today and they agreed to refund without any argument which I found strange if they had believed they were in the right and I was in the wrong. Judging by the number of replies to this forum there are many people who are being caught out with this charge - surely too many to be coincidental. Surely we cannot all be idiots as some subscribers (who may work for Amazon as far as we know) would make out.
Incidentally as the chief buyer of a company for 30 years I feel I am quite experienced in reading T&Cs and looking for hidden costs so please don't reply telling me I'm an idiot and should be more careful in completing the check boxes.
