I have just noticed the charge on my credit card and yet never placed an order for anything from Amazon, WEIRD ghostly happenings, but after a call to 0800 496 1081 Amazon customer services they happily refunded my card the £47.97.

Of course if they had even hinted at a refusal they may have wished the day had never started.

Regards to you all out there from the newbie Tony

Like a lot of you I got invited into the trial with a clear message which appeared on my order screen stating that it was free for limited period, and then chargeable. I signed up and then cancelled before the period ended.

I simply don't understand why people are using language such as 'ripped off' / 'scam'.

You signed up to a voluntary scheme.
The terms of that scheme were clearly visible.
You ticked a box to say you understood those terms.

Only the hard-of-thinking would say Amazon duped them. Or am I missing something?

I think the only thing you're missing, GreyPilgrim, is that some people are incapable of admitting when they've made a !!!!-up. It's ALWAYS somebody else's fault.

I am always happy to admit when I mess things up but this time Amazon admitted that they could not find any prime account yet a charge for prime was billed to my credit card that I last used with them 10 months ago.

So mistakes can be made by both parties I think!!

My point was not made at you.
It was at all the other posters who insited that it wasn't their fault they were 'duped' into Amazon Prime.

Your situation. as I read it, was totally different as you'd not even placed an order with them, yet they'd billed you for Prime service.

Ditto. You had a genuine reason to tell 'Rip Off'. Doesn't seem like the OP did.

I might be hard-of-thinking, but i can read. I understand perfectly terms like "limited period" and "chargeable" and I know how to cancel subscriptions. I only ever intended on using the service on that one occassion, so I think I'm entitled to feel a bit duped. I certainly don't think its a scam or a rip off, but I do think there's something wrong somewhere.
    Never leave anywhere empty handed
  • I too have this morning realised my credit card has been charged £47.97 for this prime service having a month prior ordered a last minute birthday gift for my girlfriend (in a rush) and willingly although not realising the full implications (my fault) taking up the prime service amazon offer. This is completely legal and is completely my fault for not cancelling but it is this type of offer that companies use to make that extra few quid knowing for well people often never fully really terms and conditions. I consider myself fairly intelligent and dillegent when it comes to this sort of things but I have to admit I am completely at fault for falling for a morale scam by a reliable and legitimate company.

This is easily solved, a quick call to customer services 0800 496 1081, and the membership has been cancelled and money refunded, perhaps amazon have realised this could seriously dent there marketing profile and have decided to have a little morale remorse. I condemn you amazon for resorting to these tactics in which is otherwise a splendid service you provide. But I also applaud you for the simple and excellent manner in which I have been provided with a full refund.

Sorry, Bob - but this is NOT a scam - either morale or moral.

If you're buying something, make sure what you're signing up for - don't do things 'in a rush'.
Enough people have used the free trial and cancelled before it becomes chargeable to prove that it's not a scam, rip-off or con.
You obviously didn't take enough care when placing your order - you admit you did it in a rush.
  • I just checked my bank account and found that I had been charged this prime member fee, and thanks to this website was able to find out what it was!

I've just logged into my account and as I haven't used the service was able to cancel the service online simply by clicking the cancel button. Apparently I will have my money back within a few days.

    Phew, I am very relieved!:j
