Some people are being very naive if they think a free trial is not a scam, it just happens to be a legal scam that's all.

It's exploiting various psychological weaknesses that human beings have, for financial gain. Rather like advertising in that regard.

It's very dubious marketing and any company that uses it is not one to be trusted.

Yes the "small print" explains things, just like with adverts and other amazing-this-week-only deals. Says it all really doesn't it?

Such offers are designed to mislead, so people need to be less judgemental of the individual and slightly more so towards a huge multi-national company who know exactly what they are doing with deals like this offered at the point of sale.

are you saying that the Amazon prime free trial is a scam???

As far as I am concerned there is no way it is a scam .... it is fairly obvious that you are going to have to pay for Amazon Prime at the end of the trial.

Just how much clearer do you need it to be?
What part of this statement below do people have difficulty understanding?
There's no obligation to continue beyond the trial period. You can cancel your membership through Your Account at any time during your Free Trial and you will not be charged the £49.00 annual fee

Basically, people just can't be arsed to read what's in front of them.

I'm not naive, I can see it's a FREE trial that will cost me money if I don't cancel it sometime during the trial period.
It's not exactly rocket science, is it?
    Nor is it 'dubious marketing'.
It's NOT designed to mislead at all.

If people can't read and understand what they are signing up to, they shouldn't be let loose on a computer with credit/debit cards.
Amazon might 'know exactly what they are doing with deals like this offered at the point of sale' but the buyer should make sure he/she knows what they are doing too.

    It's called personal accountability.

I can be sympathetic when someone has been genuinely scammed, but not when it's their own fault because they haven't read something that's right in front of their face.

    Hey Ho!
    Here we go again, Mark.

It's obvious that the obviously free trial offer is not obvious enough for some people.

The only part of your post I would disagree with is the "fairly obvious" comment. ;)
I'd say it was blindingly obvious - if you take the time to read it instead of clicking blindly on any box so you can get to the part where you pay your money as quickly as possible.

    Hi,

It is quite amazing the number of new users who come on this website & slag off Amazon - yet the fact you need to pay for Prime after the free trial is so damn obvious it is unbelievable .... they even offer to give you the money back if you don't use prime.

Imho, Amazon are being more than fair by refunding the Prime fee, but even that isn't enough for people like Tassium it seems.

The concept of personal opinion is often missing in advice sites I've noticed.

    Only Ebay forums are worse!

To do a cut 'n paste from an entire Amazon page complete with colour is perhaps going a but too far?

Let me translate that for you:

"I can't believe you don't agree with me.

I can't believe you cut and pasted something to wholly and utterly defeat my weak argument."

    :p:D

There are 3 types of people being caught out by this "scam":

    (1) Lazy
    (2) Stupid
    (3) Negligent
