I'm in town on Tuesday any recommendations?

You can get organic bug spray, but the chilli and garlic one I swear by. Just chilli and garlic, whizzed up in a food processor - and strained through a kitchen towel into a sprayer. Top up with water, a dash of washing up liquid or soft soap and away you go.
Watch as the little caterpillars squirm and fall off the plants.
Once sprayed, net them!!!0 -

Really annoyed as one of the caulis in particular was lovely and is ruined now.
Angela - what happened about the council selling off your allotments?0 -
Ooo how could I have missed this thread. 95% of my veg gardening is done in containers so I have the unenviable (sp) task of having to repot everything every so often.
I am glad I managed to get a tonne of flower buckets from asda for free otherwise I really would be in trouble this year.0 -
Just enjoying a cuppa, having returned from a spot of 'guerilla gardening'. The foxgloves in our garden were magnificent earlier so I've saved all the seed from the dried pods and collected them in two large envelopes. As we have a long footpath near us with earth banks,, I meandered along it this morning with my trowel digging little patches of earth and sprinkling in the seeds. An elderly gentleman walked past me and asked me what I was doing. When I told him, he replied "How lovely. Hope I live long enough to see them flower next year",which made me stop and think. Sometimes we have to wait rather a long time to see the results of our sowing and planting. Glad I wasn't planting walnut trees, otherwise I might not be around by the time they start fruiting :eek:0

It's rained and rained here today, shame the water butts are disconnected as they leak and we have a drainage problem too.
Even worse news is my pots have blight - off to cut the foliage off now!The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
No gardening for two days - just lots of rain and chilly weather with the sky so dark at 8 p.m. with rainclouds that it felt that autumn nights had already arrived. Cut my losses and went to bed early with a book as I listened to the thunder and rain outside and felt rather sorry for any poor folks for had gone camping or caravanning this week.0

No gardening here for 2 days either

And I have just opened the curtains to see 2 of my tomato plants ripped apart and my lovely roses smashed by the wind and rain. I am going to have to put on waterproofs and go and try and save them0 -
Took out the gone-over petunias from 2 containers and replanted with climbing beans and some remaindered bedding plants from B&Q.
Had loads of rain over past 2 weeks, but we're on limestone so it drains pretty well. Been cropping a courgette a day from 2 plants, froze the last of broad bean crop and picking leaf beet, chard and kale as well as using lifted earlies. Favourite recipe for courgettes is to bake them in tom puree with sweet basil.
Runner beans are flowering well and first pods appearing. Wont be long before the glut
. Just a few yellow waxpods nearly ready, first time of growing so looking fwd to seeing how they taste. Anoither cuc ready in greenhouse and loads of toms but all still green. Will grow some gardeners delight next year for earlier ripening.
Ah well, cool and showery today, so will potter around and do a bit of weeding.0 -
RAIN. Pah
I've had enough now and would like it to be hot and sunny for a bit. Especially so I can go and mass murder slugs. They've eaten one of my pumpkin plants right through the main stem but that seems to be soldiering on and the other one has had leaves left right and centre chewed through.
They've decimated my 2 butternut squashes and the blue ballet squashes are looking quite perilous.
I dislike slugs

Good morning everyone - it's raining here too! I have just harvested the first beetroot from my veg boxes and they are simmering on the stove now. I only pulled two which were about the size of a squash ball - hope the others will continue to grow! I also pulled about 6 baby carrots and 3 spring onions, so feeling quite chuffed.
I also hate slugs. Up until this last week I have managed to keep them off my stuff but now one square of my lettuces have been eradicated by the blighters. I used vaseline round the tops of the planters which seemed to keep them at bay but perhaps I need to do another application. I will go if the rain stops - you can tell I am a beginner at this - I expect some of you more experienced folk wouldn't be put off by a little bit of wet weather!
Hope the sun shines on all of you soon!
