I was thinking gravel for the base as that would give me an option to remove it later if I changed my mind...or is that a silly idea? Thanks again for your advice.

Although I've never done it, gravel as the base, on top of weed control fabric, seems a good idea, as you say, you can change it then if you want.
As zazen says, if someone was buying me one, I guess I wouldn't complain about it too much. Although obviously I can't tell the way you deal with your Dad. :)
    Good luck with it.

Thank you both. Believe me I'm not complaining....I'm just gobsmaked at at the amount because any time I've thought of a greenhouse I was thinking more of a cheapy starter one from homebase or somewhere similar.

Zazen, He wouldn't entertain ebay I'm afraid. The place he's buying from is a well known local firm that specialises in greenhouses. I love your idea of raised beds, that's something I'll definitely have a think about.

lotus eater, he doesn't listen to us. It's quite amusing really...eg I tell him on Sunday to pinch the tops of his tomatoes, he disagrees and then he phones my sister (HariboJunkie, who is an experienced gardener) on Monday to tell her that she should be pinching the tops of her tomatoes because that's what he's done. :D

I think I should stop fretting over the cost and just be grateful and enjoy learning as much as I can about greenhouse growing before it arrives. When I find out the make I'll let you know.

The gravel is good too because it will act as a heat sink. Ours has a bed on the right hand side as you walk in and staging on the left with a potting bit at the end. There's a layer of gravel under the staging.

    What a lovely present! :)

I think mine cost 7 hundred and something, that was a Halls 10 x 6 ft, louve auto vent and 2 roof autovents, including metal base (which you normally have to buy extra) toughened glass and all in plastic coated green, which again is extra instead of grey aluminium.
Came from the greenhouse people, if you have a look at their site it should give you some idea.

Maybe that 2 thousand including the base (concrete?) and setting up as well?
I think the cost to erect one is around £200 - 300 and the base is extra.

If I had a choice and money no object (sort of :D because I would really have a custom built cedar one if money was really no object) I would get one of these.

Good morning everyone! What with the rain and the recent sunny days, the garden is going mad again  We'd usually have gone down to mowing the lawn (my least favourite job  ) every 2 weeks, but it's still green and needs doing weekly  We're off for a fortnight tomorrow, so it'll be full of tigers once we get back :D

Off to collect DD from her Scout Jamboree in Harrogate this afternoon, so DH and I are going to see the RHS gardens at Harlow Carr :j

And when we're back from holidays we'll have a pig, a younger version of my avatar :T Can't wait.

    See you later, Penny. x

Oooo ...jealously is a terrible thing :D

Is that in the freezer or in the garden? And if in the garden, you will have two presumably?

Pink.... Will you stop worrying and just enjoy it?;):p:A:kiss:

The sun is out but it was windy last night so I'm off to check the garden for damage.

Will be back for a cup of coffee later. :D

    Morning all,

Thanks everyone for your advice yesterday. We had a bad winds and rain here last night so I was out in the garden first thing and thankfully apart from the pot with leeks being blown over there is no damage. I decided to dig up the garlic and found surprising results. As an experiment I had planted two troughs, one with Solent Wight and the other with regular cloves I had in the cupboard from the supermarket....the supermarket ones are much bigger and better looking than the Solent Wight! I take it I just dry them out now?

Later I have a bit of weeding to do and I want to pick the rest of the peas for the freezer as they're getting a bit big and tough now.

Hope you all have a good day.

Long story, but the bare bones - our pig (named Crackling :D ) will live on someone else's smallholding with 2 of her twin sisters until Oct/Nov time, and will then live in our freezer ;) Short-term plan is to rent a piece of land to raise 2 further pigs at a time; long-term plan is to have a smallholding in North Yorks :T

Harlow Carr is postponed; DD has asked if we can collect her earlier, so DH has gone icon9.gif Upside - we get her back sooner :T
