Not been on this thread for a while.
Sorry sue those slugs are swines, I lost some sprouts and cabbages to them.
Pink wish I could afford a better GH but have been very happy with my cheapy Norfolk one so far.
Penny can I join the club wanting a smallholding lol. But mine will be on the other side of the pennines ;).

Had a lovely sunny weekend here, and been lucky in the week although we had some rain it has alternated with sun as well.
Watched the kids picking peas and pulling carrots this morning, the look on their faces was priceless. They then washed a couple of carrots off with the hose and stood munching in the sun, I think we are all hooked on gardening :)
    Have a good one everyone

Managed to get quite a bit done today

Dug up remaining spuds - a few have been slugged but most are ok, just need to get them in a sack now

Pruned my tayberry and tied in the new shoots

Removed a very old and woody rosemary ready to plant an espalier apple in it's place.

OH has prunned the plant around the door which grows like anything

Planted out a large pot of Japanese anemones from Mum

Tomorrow I hope to sow some more lettue and some winter lettuce plus start tidying up the strawberries

I visited a garden yesterday under the Scotlands Gardens scheme (or whatever) and it was luvverly - it was a modern house so not a particularly big garden but they had it sectioned off into different "rooms" and had great raised veg beds. My DH was inspired by the homemade frames for growing peas etc so he's going to make some for me - yipppee!:j
I bought some plants that I don't need as usual - is anyone else addicted to buying plants?:o

Also does anyone else watch Open Gardens with Carol Klein weekday lunchtimes? I love noseing around other peoples gardens!

I've become quite fed up with the garden. It's been so wet and cold, the salad leaves went unpicked and bolted because we haven't wanted to eat salad, other plants have been eaten by slugs and caterpillars. My tomatoes only have a handful of flowers, my dwarf beans have a grand total of 3 pods and although my courgettes have flowers, they don't seem to be fruiting at all. :(

There are a couple of good things though. The chillis are ripening nicely and I have some little cucumbers growing.

I just wish the weather would get better to dry things out a bit. Over the last month we've had rain pretty much every day.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Morning all, Just thought I would quickly check in for a quick cuppa.

Am currently rebuilding the chicken run as they are frequently breaking out and gorging themselves on my vegetables - the veggie beds are looking definitely the worse for wear as a result as they have eaten all the spinach, salad veg, lower leaves on the sprouts, etc. Very annoying.

So, OH and I started yesterday and I will try to complete today.

We are off on hols for seven days this week, so I have a kind neighbour coming around to feed the chooks and water my hanging baskets.

We had the first two toms from the plants this week (at last!) I have lots of green toms, but few ripening at the moment. Even the ones in the HM polytunnel seem a bit slow this year.

A couple of the potatoes have flowers on them, so I am likely to harvest them after the holiday.

Lovely day - got to get outside - have a good day!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Drizzle in the air now but dry earlier and cut out the old raspberry canes and tied in the stronger new canes. Sunny yesterday so lifted the garlic and onions and they're now spread out to dry.

Still cropping both indoor and outdoor cucumbers but the botrytis is claiming whats left of the indoor toms despite drastic surgery. Still, have a few outdoor toms that look pretty healthy so may get some yet.

Down to the last 5kg of the new potatoes, been eating the home grown pots since late May and it'll be stargnge buying them in the shops again. Courgettes, runner beans, chard and leaf beet cropping well, more french beans to come and just about to plant out cabbage under nets. Enjoy your gardens!

Can someone cheer me up please?

I've just found blight tonight and just spent the evening chopping up my plants and spraying bordeaux mixture all over them. Now got over 3kilos of green cherry toms.

Hoping the other outdoor tomatoes will still be ok

    :(:(

    As you wish.

I haven't eaten any french beans yet, my 3 courgette plants don't seem to be performing as well as they should be, maybe had 6 or 7 off each so far. My strawberries have all have had to be pulled up due to viruses. My summer raspberries look a bit sick. Three of my four winter squash only have one fruit on them , one of my cucumber plants has only produced one! cuc.
And when I entered my perfectly formed miniature cucumber in the local show, (it really was nice, beautiful cucumber) everyone laughed because it was only about 6" long and everyone elses was the regulation 12" :rotfl: It didn't win anything either :D
I did try to explain it wouldn't get any bigger and you had to eat them like that...but they all thought I was trying to make excuses and various personal thoughts about my person were put forward. :p bug gers. ;)

How does that make you feel?

Cooler and cloudier today after week of wall to wall sunshine. Decided to lift the bunching onions from one of the ornamental front beds and replace with bugle. Split the bulbs and replanted in one of the veg beds and also have about 30 plants potted up to sell in the spring.

Still a few courgettes forming but I doubt if the plants will produce much more, from those two plants we've averaged about 2 a day for several months so I wont be too sorry!

Pigeons have got the Pak Choi, but the spring cabbage is netted and forming nicely. Unfortunately the broccoli outgrew the netting, flowered, got infested by caterpillars and was cut down last week and composted. Getting a few final toms from outdoor plants and this morning sent a kilo of runner beans to OH's work for seed money and still getting climbing beans and yellow brittle wax, but not for much longer.

You can feel the change of season and there's a list of jobs to winterize the garden, as well as the harvesting of the autumn crops and soon it'll be time for planting next years garlic and overwintering broad beans.

I'm kicking myself that I didnt plant swedes this year as its a winter veg we use a lot. Will also plant more carrots next year, apart from some fanging have been pleased with crop so far with no noticeable root fly.

Hmmm, might need to sweep out the potting shed, its a bit dusty and are those mouse droppings....?
