The Potting Shed - come on in, the kettle's on!

Hello everyone :hello: My garden is currently burgeoning :T The decorative bits look lovely, and we're eating produce every day :T

I thought it might be an idea to have a thread for gardeners to chat about the ups and downs of their gardening days.

Obviously, if you have a burning question, that might get lost in this thread, have a search and see if you can find an exisiting thread, or start a new one.

Otherwise, come on in  Tea or coffee, and would you like a slice of

Wet outside so wont be doing too much, esp as minding gd3 this morning.

Going to look at the greenhouse toms in a few minutes, noticed upper leaves going brown, not sure why.

Mine's a strong black coffee please Penny. :D

Have just been out for my early morning potter..... fed the birds and a little wood mouse who loves peanuts and waits for them every morning by the pond. :o

It's damp here but not raining and I have weeding to do today. I'm not really troubled by weeds other than the sunflower seeds which take root under the bird tables. More deadheading to do and a few more salads to sow.

Need to spend some time with the children too.

    Hello!

Well, we finally got a few showers this morning, it's looking very grey and miserable but on the plus side, I'll get some time off from lugging watering cans around and hopefully the water butts will fill up again! I cleaned them out yesterday and got unbelievable amounts of sludge off the bottom of them. It smelt evil but I figured it's got to be good for the garden so I mixed it into a raised bed and planted some sweetcorn into it. I know it's a bit late for sweetcorn really but we never seem to grow enough, so what the hey, it's worth a shot. I've planted Swift, as it grows faster, hoping it'll get there in time.

Since it's probably not going to be gardening weather I'm going to take a load of rubbish to the tip instead. We rent and we're still clearing out our massively neglected garden, so I've got loads of pampas and bramble that I'd rather not compost myself. I've also got to formulate a plan on what to plant next. Then w*rk this afternoon.

I hope everyone has a good day.

    ooooo :)

Hello all! We had a lovely bit of rain last night (thunder and lightning, but I missed it all) so very pleased I don't have to rush around tonight after work trying to make sure nothing's died.

Brocolli and spinach bolted so we'll be eating those for the next few days! Quite exciting as this is my first year growing :)

Lovely morning here - dull, overcast and raining. And boy, does the garden need it.

Morning, a long, strong black coffee for me.
I'm sitting typing this out whilst praying that the large black cloud overhead produces a good downpour !!! Never have I been so interested in and grateful for the rain....I was always one to complain in the summer whenever it rained, but now I grow stuff (or am trying to),bring it on....
Hope everyone has a productive day now it's not so melty.

    Tea for me please!

BY 10pm last night we still hadn't had any rain so lobbed a couple of watering cans around just in case. This morning we have a bit of heavy drizzle but the roads are drying off fast so there can't have been much. That said I was thinking earlier in the week when other commitments were keeping me from watering - farmers and market gardeners must grow similar crops and yet they aren't out watering their fields every day (I know if it gets really bad some put irrigation systems out) so presumably once plants are established they can survive without frequent watering. Obviously things in pots with limited water retention need help but I've been quite pleased with how little I've had to water in the last fortnight.

My big problem at the moment is the grass - its never been bowling green because we aren't that way inclined but its now got so many other things growing it that I may have to get the weedkiller on it - its got the usual daisies that weren't a problem but we've now got white clover, something purple and something yellow (not buttercups - tiny little flowers). These are all attracting wasps and bees and my other half got stung on the sole of her foot the other day accidentally treading on one. I'm all for letting nature do its thing (as long as its not eating too much of my food or is a slug) but I think a line has been crossed and I'm going to have to do something especially as we have two pre-school children that I don't want getting stung.

Plan for the weekend if I get time is another row each of carrots and parsnips ( this is the first year I've had any success with root crops as I've now added more compost on top of the raised beds which stops them having to fight their way through the clay) and cut all the grass. Oh and try to forget that the half mile (I exaggerate somewhat but it feels like it) of hedge needs trimming.

    Hiya!

    Tea, white without please!

Am going out today to quickly harvest some courgettes before they turn into marrows!

I forgot to bring in the garlic I harvested yesterday - so they got rained on. I will hang them up to dry out now.

    Grey skies have cleared here....
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
