That would depend whether you want to tell Smile to do a CHAPS transfer (at a cost), of course.

    HTH

    Thanks

    Thank you.

Just telephoned and they confirmed the details you provided above and also gave me my reference number so I was able to make a supplementary payment in addition to my account opening payment that is scheduled to be taken from my bank by DD on 23 July.

I've phoned Newcastle BS this morning. I'm a new customer and therefore I have to send a document for identification. I've been told that I cannot fund my accounts before the identification process. This would take a couple of days. So my initial thought of funding my account via BACS would not work as the deadline of receiving funds is 24 July.
I've been advised to send my identification document together with a funding cheque. Hope this is somewhat useful for others.

On this occasion, do you think it is advisable to send everything in by recorded delivery? I'm wondering whether recorded delivery might belay things rather using the free post address...

I think freepost is second class. May be faster putting a 1st class stamp on it instead.

I would send it in the freepost envelope they sent you AND then also request next day special delivery (before 1pm) at the post office. It does cost around £5 but worth it.

I have done this on occasions when I wanted a freepost letter to arrive quickly.

    .

Hmmm..... Also a new customer. I just rang and quoted what you said about not being able to "fund my accounts before the identification process", and was told that I definitely could - and should.
I was advised to do a BACS transfer today, becauuse "your ID probably won't be verified 'till early next week"
She also told me not to worry because "we are pretty good" and we will honour all applications. ... whatever that means.
    Maybe it's just me

It's quite annoying and confusing to get different answers depending whom you're talking to over the phone. I should have asked for the staff member's name who has given me that information.

Well I rang them again to be sure (spoke to Ross!!) - and was assured again that if your application is being processed or your account is open you can definitely add funds in whatever way you wish as long as they have the money by 24th.

The e mail states clearly that a BACS payment can only be made for the initial deposit only. So those intending to top up by BACS may need to think again.
Take my advice at your peril.
