Apparently the 3% fee is correct, although they can't say why I was originally advised otherwise.

It is IMHO because HBOS have incredibly flimsy customer service systems in place. It took weeks to sort out my problem. I had to call repeatedly and was fobbed off for several weeks over a minimum payment error. Speaking to complaints (who CAN deal with the problem unlike CS) is like getting blood out of a stone, they will not transfer you, they say it cannot be done.....then finally they do it. Infuriating.

I would advise you to request the refund and a payment to cover your phone calls (and time wasted if they dont act promptly: they should record the problem, phone you back (when they say they will) and deal with it. You should not have to hound them)

Also, although Bank of Scotland & Halifax are technically part of the same group, HBOS, they still operate separately so, in this case, it's important to deal with Bank of Scotland

You should get your refund though, if you're persistent. Thanks for your feedback, which alerts others. On the plus side, we still have a couple of months of 0% for purchases. ;)

  • After calling yesterday, my complaint was passed to the complaints department. They called me today to apologise for the confusion and say they will refund the BT charge.

However, they also confirmed that the new 3% charge will be applied for all future balance transfers. I'm still not convinced this is correct but I really don't want to spend any more time arguing the toss.

Hope this helps anyone in the same position - make sure you check you BT charge and make notes on when and whom you speak to at BOS.
