Sellers who see their buyers as "the enemy". I try to refer to them as customers rather than buyers.

Also the sellers with dozens of listings for new items, but clearly state in their listings that they "are not a business, they just buy and sell as a hobby"

Proclaiming to be the "Cheapest" - cheapest is rarely the best value, and I wonder what corners have been cut/taxes not paid/faults not described etc that enable them to discount so heavily.

    No photos
    Bad grammar & spelling
Long list of reasons why they are great and everyone else is rubbish
Sorry tales about how they've been ripped off in the past so now don't trust anyone - at all - ever again
    Endless T&C's
People who say "vintage" when what they really mean is "old and tatty"
Over use & abuse of excalmation marks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paucity of details - especially when things like size is needed (essential when I am feeding my handbag habit)
And people who put L@@K in their listing titles - as if I'm gonna search on that:rolleyes:

thanks for that, i'm gonna try the good luck bit in some of mine (loads of views but no buyers)

Every listing or sales advertisement be it on ebay or elsewhere should contain these basic elements,
    • What it is (don't assume they know even if it's obvious, remind them)
    • Why they need it (again don't assume, but don't hit them over the head with it be subtle)
    • Why they should buy from you over competition, (again, subtle, don't badmouth the competition or make outlandish claims just quietly highlight your plus points, if your a business say registered uk business, if you offer fast despatch time mention it but stick to it, if most competitors are selling from abroad highlight you are in the UK etc etc)
    • why they should buy now/a call to action (if it truly is a limited time offer i.e a one off batch of liquidated stock, say so otherwise go for a call to action as discussed.)
then look at your price point, is it higher or lower than the competition? if it's a little higher don't panic but you will need to sell on service not price so make sure your highlighting your service in the listing and not claiming to be offering the cheapest deal.
I used to sell books on Amazon for a while i was nowhere near the cheapest but i offered same day despatch on all orders placed before 3pm where as my competitors generally quoted 48 hour turn around, i found my place in the market based on service not price.

Basically if you are getting lots of views and no bids/buyers you need to review and overhaul your listing, something is not right, work out what it is and fix it, hopefully the above will give you some starting points to work from.

Hmm - this is very interesting actually!

I agree with the horrible back ground, needless graphics etc. They just slow it down for me as I like to browse quickly.

What I'm wondering is what do people feel is a good page? Any examples etc? I must admit I have been quilty of using multi coloured text (like the title of the page in red bold then the rest just black bold) and I centre things!

Any examples of a good lay out?

Also - are people put off if the seller doesn't post out of the UK. If you (as a seller) do post out of the UK - do you feel secure doing it?

Sorry if my post takes this off topic!

    • Try using bullet points instead.
    • It has the same effect
    • But is easier to read.
    • And won't upset Faye as much as centered text.

Cyril on a related point (and I'm on a roll now and the OP may regret opening this thread!), how about one that I actually started a thread on last year whose title was 'book' or 'shoes' or 'ornament'.

Yep, that's all they said, so I checked the description and they had nothing at all apart from the single word 'book' again, and a shaky photo.Obviously the seller never sold a thing but just kept relisting and must have been paying a fortune in fees

I emailed her and explained that some description would be useful, and explained that she was losing a lot of money on fees. She thanked me politely and said that nothing sold so she was incurring no fees (oh dear) and amended her descriptions to 'nice book' and 'pretty shoes'.
