When I am stitching I try to do the backstitch as it comes and not all at the end. Doesn't seem so bad that way.
I'm the same - I like to see the design come alive as I go, rather than doing all the b/st at once.
That way, once a section is done..it's DONE and I don't need to go back to it lol.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. Here is the UFO I've dragged out to work on - after 10 minutes I remembered why I put it to oneside!
Going to push on and finish it now though because it really is quite pretty. Design is Tracery Dragons by Teresa Wentzler. Loads of complicated backstitching  which THIS TIME I will do as I go along!0 -
I just googled your UFO Amanita and I agree, it does look real pretty.
I'll also say that even though I have learnt to do backstitching as I go....if I don't want to do the backstitching at all then I won't.
On Rubys' xmas present I have left some out as I think the overall design looks 'softer' without the (sometimes) harsh lines of backstitching (I did do some of the backstitching then unpicked it as I didn't like it)

Hi all
I've only just found this thread and it's brilliant. You've motivated me into trying to complete some of my UFO's - if I tell you that I have one from 1992 you'll guess that I have a few. I will try and post some piccies when I find the camera lead.
I haven't picked up my xstitch for a couple of years but last night I looked out one of them and started stitching - I hadn't realised how much I love it and how relaxing it is.
I'm just finishing this one off http://www.sewandso.co.uk/cgi-bin/find/db.cgi?db=zoom&uid=&Prod_Code=7295&ww=on&do=search_results as I only needed to do the border on it.
I also have the border on this one http://www.sewandso.co.uk/cgi-bin/find/db.cgi?db=zoom&uid=&Prod_Code=10588&ww=on&do=search_results to do as well.
I love looking at the projects you are completing - it's very inspirational.Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts - DFW Nerd 323

I buy charts - I find it works out cheaper and I don't have loads of excess thread after a project, I just use what I need.
It did take a couple of years to get to the point where I have every colour of DMC in my storage box, but it does make things so much easier now. I buy fabric when I see a bargain so usually have a good stash of that as well.
As for sites....so many!! But some of the ones I use more often are:

Personally I have only ever bought kits. I was looking into buying charts a while ago but once I got a few bargain kits on ebay I didn't bother (I couldn't have bought everything seperately for less ££ )
I think if I saw a chart I really wanted and loved I would cost it up seperately versus buying it as a kit......then I'd go for the cheaper option:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0
