i think this is a great idea i am gonna get my bloke who is really bad with money to check all his bank statements (i bet you £100 he'll be lucky to find more than 3 and they will be from ages ago) and we shall go from there looks like i'll be getting him to write off to the bank to get copies of previous statements and then go from there

however, i have been one of those people who always keeps on top of my spending however, when i bought my house i got charged £10 for getting a bankers draft as apprantly it was "policy" because i had a cheque book, can i claim for this, over the past fee years i think i have had 2 39 charges for direct debits that were 1p out or something like that so i will look into claiming

did notice though that there are no success stories yet so keep us updated with your progress it will give us all hope
Well we finally did it got a house not on a main road, next a railway line or any other werid and wonderful things that get on my nerves!!!

this is a common tactic, they are stalling as long as possible in the hopes you will give up

I have reclaimed once through filing a claim (halifax bank), halifax CC by threatening on the phone, and other times by pleading banks fault or other circumstances

Currently the A&L have charged me 75 quid for there mess up.

I will get that back, one way or the other, but am going to phone up first

    The key is consistency

    Tips include
    1) Logging (either by diary or pc/paper) the time/date and the operatives and what was said
    2) Read the bankcharges website and find out what you are claiming for nd why the charges are punitive
    3) Remember the phone people are not trained in the law, they are trained in what to say to put you off, it is not there fault, dont make it personal
    4) Ask to speak to a manager, this will not help but show you are serious, explain your intentions, the sections of the Contract law relevant, the 8% interest and other fees they will pay, 9/10 this will not work, but some managers will realise the savings that can be made, even if they dont have the power to do anything
    5) Stick to your story, (this is why 2 is important), always say the same thing, the calls are logged and inconsistency is picked up on.
    6) Dont take half offers, you want ALL the money back, tell them this
    7) Use the templates, but also add your own element, the banks will be used to the letters now so make sure it says what you want it to say.
    8) Triple check your figures, if you make a mistake this will not be in your favour, give the bank no reason to dispute your claim
    9) Check your statements, write down what the charges were for and put it into a spreadsheet, this will help you calculate interest
    10) Dont be afraid to set the court action rolling, you are doing nothing wrong, and in the event of a 1 in a million chance you lose, then you will only pay the initial fee (£50)
    11) Remain calm, and deal with the banks on your own terms, they may chase you and if you dont want to deal with them, get them to phone back later, its your right.

there are many more i probably forgot but i hope this will help at least one person

Dont be indecisive regarding this, get the info now, and get the ball rolling!

check out http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=163734 for my success story :)

Even if by ringing up to get 25/30 quid back thats a success, its all relative

Help!!! I am trying to get this all straight and with a poorly baby (currently asleep, thankfully!) I am getting into a bit of a head spin. All geared up last night, but am trying to put the letters together now and am stuck.

    1) I am intending to claim back charges for my Barclays account (I have telephoned and copy statements are being sent out for May 2000 to December 2002 as they are missing. They are charging £5 for the copy statements. I did ask for a list of charges made, but she just fobbed me off with the copy statements. Is this okay? Do I need to find out how much interest this would have accrued and does anyone know how I figure it out?

    2) Claiming back from OH & Joint RBS. Have all my statement. Only £60 from each account, but its the principal right!? As its a small amount I wasn't going to bother with any interest. Do you think that is okay?

    3) Claiming back from OH Cap One credit card. Have all the statements, so don't need to send DPA letter. Do I just go straight for the credit card letter requesting charges returned to me? Also, how do I go about figuring out interest incurrred? Do I use the spreadsheet thingy for 8% interest?

    4) Claiming back from OH Monument card. Again have the statements, so I just go to the credit card letter requesting charges returned, right?

Soo many questions I know, but I want to get this right. This could mean our move to London happens a few months sooner, so need to get it right. I suffer from panic attacks and would post these questions onto the Bank Action forum, but am getting confused and don't want to get told off for putting stuff in the wrong place. Right am talking drivel now, so will await all your fab help!

I don't have a clue about credit card charges to be honest Alley!

Reagrding your interest, there is a spreadsheet that works it all out for you.

This one is if you have Excell!

Right, thanks! So, I use the excel spreadsheet to calculate the interest charges from when they were levied up until the present day and put that in the letter requesting my cash back?

Sorry, told you I was having a spanner day. Blimey I've got a mystery shopping assignment later as well, I may have to have a lie down!

Edit, just had another look at that link SS, and it says not to put those interest charges in until you have to file a claim (I assume in court?). I think I will just stick to trying to claim back the charges and not bother with any interest.

    Don't pay for your statements!!!!!!!
You can get the information much cheaper than £5 per statement. Go to the BAG website and look for the DPA letter in the Library. You can make a data subject request to the bank for all your charges and it will cost you no more than £10 - by law. They also legally have 40 days to give you the information or get in big trouble.
