Have just received letter from Abbey which reads as complete twaddle.

All it says is that they've passed my complaint (?!) onto a member of their team to investigate and will hopefully get back to me sometime in the next four weeks!

So does this count as an acknowledgement? Or just a complete fob-off?
I'm starting to get annoyed now!

neither. Its for them to hope that you give up. If you havent recieved a cheque in 14 days, by mail, or into the bank account, then proceed as normal. Take them to court

EDIT yes, its an acknoledgement, they had to have recieved your letter to have passed it on, count it within the 14 days

My bank ignored my letters and kept saying in a standardised response that they "might" respond personally within a month. I was like !!!!!!, and a few days before my deadline I sent another LBA with big red bold type saying "NOTICE OF IMPENDING LEGAL PROCEEDINGS" and they ignored that too, so it's definitely them stalling.

Just wait the deadline out and submit your claim to moneyclaim.gov.uk as per the the next step to take
