  • Hi seven-day-weekend (that sounds great by the way! How do I get one of those?).

No this isn't really an official club - more of a thread to offer advice and support on how to get fitter and lose a bit of weight in a debt free way. I can't afford to join a gym you see (and not sure I would use it even if I could!) so I started the thread looking for ways to get active for free - or at least very cheaply.

Can you do more walking in the evenings when it is cooler? Walking (especially uphill) is such a fantastic way to lose some weight slowly but surely and that way it is more likely to stay off. It's also been really useful for me with regards to helping tone up my legs and shift some lard off my ar5e too! For free, which is even better.

Do you have a bike? Cycling is also excellent. Swimming pool anywhere near? That'd be fantastic especially if you are in a warm climate.

Yes cutting back on beer & tapas will help too. I think we've mostly all realised on here that we need to step up the fresh fruit & veggies and look closely at our diets if we want to lose a bit of weight. Which is also good for the old grocery shopping bill too.....

    Hi, thanks for the info!

I've been walking tonight (uphill)! Do not have a bike here - I used to cycle in the UK too! There is a terrific new open air swimming pool opened between our village and the next, but I don't swim, don't like going in the water.

Have to be walking then. I did start going walking in the morning with my friend, then it got too hot, so we stopped.

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted.

Your question - how do you get a seven-day-weekend?

You take early retirement and run off to a tiny little village in southern Spain!

Did anyone read the article in The Observer Woman magazine today?

    Here's the text:

Shame it hasn't got the pictures to go with it!

A lesson in not getting carried away!

Thanks seven day weekend.....only another 30 years or so for me then till I get mine

Hi rose07 - welcome to the thread. I did an 8 week challenge with Kellogs to improve on my walking amounts per day. You do become more tuned in to what constitutes 10,000 steps a day so it will get easier.

Unfortunately I chose to do my challenge around May time - well, whenever it was it was when we were having a serious amount of rain and unseasonably cold weather so I didn't hit 10,000 steps as often as I would have liked as going out at lunchtime was a complete no no.

However now seems to be a lovely time to get out at lunchtime and march around the park or any suitable streets or areas near you. I also used to substitute walking with dancing around my lounge on nights I had the house to myself...this used to raise my total by a pleasantly surprising amount actually and lift my mood...so I recommend it.

Good luck and remember every bit of movement helps! It's all better than sittig on the couch!

Toning stomach: well I am sure Minnie can help out there! But she did post some good exercises sort of mid way through this thread (or search for posts by minniespender).

Also, if you are fit enough to run or start running, do that. Ever seen a good runner with a big stomach...?

See above on abs! (post #1178)

Toning will help, but you have to shift the flab to see the work you've done. Keep up the walking, do some basic crunches (start with 10 a day abd build up to as many as you like).

I swear by yoga for a good strong "core" - back and tum - once that's strong, you're rocking and your posture will improve too!
