Well I never thought I'd be running 8k in August when I signed up in March that's for sure! I feel so good for doing it.. it makes me wonder why I never started sooner!!

And knowing I'm raising money for Charity is such a feel good factor! It's nice not to have to worry about my debts and probs for a change, as there are many worse off!!

Bloody hell K9Cuddles!!!!!! Well done and a massive :T :T :T :T I dream of doing things like that. Good for you and well done!!

Welcome Ruthiejane and MadDogWoman to our merry big and growing (in a number of people sense only) "Cuddle"! It's a friendly place with lots of advice, tips and plenty of silliness and laughter thrown in....just what we all need really!

And I'll have you all know that in honour of my knew debt-free state I splurged on a CD (CD-Wow with a £1 off voucher so only £8.99) of Fat-Boy Slim's Greatest Hits and have just been dancing around the place to all the "tooons" for a while........OH out with mates so hopefully they won't come back and catch me doing my mental hippo-on-the-rampage-dance-routine......but I reckon I've worked off at least...errrrr.....5 calories???

I'm a seriously !!!!!! runner...dodgy knees and large boobs don't help......but a story of achievement like this is an inspiration to so many of us stragglers/strugglers so a little diary of how you set about doing this would be massively appreciated!

Number One.. no excuses!!! I've got bum, boobs, tighs the lot! I'm am glad I can't see myself running that's for sure!!! :rotfl: As you can see from my sig I was was nearly 19.5stone in March, so I'm no petite flower either!

I saw an ad on the TV for the Race for Life.. I said I "might" enter and was shot down by my Mum and BF about how i couldn't do it! Well that was it! I convienced a work mate to join me and our training began! It was just taken from the training guide off the website! Well the big day come and it was BAKING!!! I managed 5k (with a lot of walking I was disappointed with this as I wanted to run nonstop but was only used to running in the evenings not noon!!!) in 37mins! And raised £812!!!!

So I thought I've got along way to go fitness wise (and weight! I had lost 9.5lb in that training and it felt good!) so I booked myself in on the next race possible! 8k for 19th Sept.. (raised the trainnig bar a lil bit!). I'm sad, like my all my spreadsheets for my debt I have one for training too.. I like to burn atleast 3500 calories a week and I built up a regime now too.

I cycle 6mile too and from work on Wed and Saturday (I figured I bought a bike a year ago I should really use it!!!).. yes it was a killer at first.. but now it only takes my 10mins longer then driving!!! And I try 3 runs a week.. Long one on Monday, a fast paced but short on Tuesday and a Middle sized run on Friday.

I feel so much better as a person, I've given myself ME time, which before never happened. I don't plan training this "intense" forever but a nice healthly balance will he me keep to my dream weight (when I get there!)! Along time off yet.. and I still eat what i want (but I try to be sensible! I've ditched Coke (I was on 2+litres a day! ) make sure I get my fruit and veg a day and take all my vitamins etc!!!.

When I first started running my knees hurt so bad I couldn't hardly bend them after a session, I run it out with Doctors advice and basically I had SHOCKED them in to working! I don't have any problems any more but I make sure I take my vitamins to keep me topped up on anything I'm missing! As for Boobs a very expensive sport bra sorted that from M&S.. they don't budge a bit now!! And bum.. well still working on that!!

I must admit there's not wonderful solution.. it's what everyone has been preaching for years! I now eat breakfast (before I didnt' eat anything til about 1pm when my body was in starvation mode and will then store anything you eat!).

I'm by no means perfect.. but I do now just feel so much better! I now understand that it's okay to cycle even though I have a car! And that I don't have to eat all the food on my plate! It took me a very long time to work it out.. and had a bit belt of depression before I realised that it's true.. you have to love youself before you love anyone else!! I've picked so many tips of MSE.. I mean I never knew wholemeal rice and pasta existed until I read one thread!! How narrow minded was my shopping abilities!! I signed up to Runners World.. 3 mags for a £1.. another MSE tip! And cycling to work save me petrol!

It really is the little things that count and add up, if you slow change the lil things the bigger things fall in to place (Well I hope.. I'll let you know on my weigh in!). it is about a lifestyle change.. hence why diets are no good to me!!! I was also spurred on that I can't weigh more then 114kg (18st) for the indoor Sky Dive I've picked to do for my BF Bday.. how embrassing laying on the floor of a wind tunnel where they can't lift you! Likewise with this 8k run.. I soooooo don't want to be last and scared stiff of all the super fit, running shorts wearing people that are gonna look and me and wonder what I'm up too!!!

But I figure... sometimes you have to challenge yourself, whether you like it or not to realise your own potential.. too many of use keep it locked away in a box! :D

That was a seriously long post!

Well that's made me think. I've been whingeing about how I can't do this and I can't do that cos of my knees (they crackle when I bend down cos of the knackered cartilege) and I'm too heavy to run etc. Considering I'm a "mere" 14st6lbs, you put me well and truly to shame - by your determination alone!

Best I get off my lazy lardy bottom and do something to redress the balance. I think I should invest in a bike and start riding (trying not to think of what my bum must look like to the car driver behind me!) as that would be a great start. Any tips for where I should start looking?

:T :T :T :T for raising so much money on your run - an excellent achievement all round!

Freebird... Cycling would be good as it's low impact on your joints! I bought a bike from sterlinghouse, buy 1 get one free! if you search MSE your'll find loads! There ok bikes for beginners but are steel framed so heavy! Some have mentioned just buying a decent 2nd hand for the same money of better quality, personally I wouldn' thave a clue what I was looking for! As for a big bum... my cycle helment it enough to put anyone off!!!

I believe glucosamine will help for your knees, it's not cheap but if you search on this forum you'll find loads about it. My doctor recommended it to me if my knees were gonna continue to play up!

Weight is different for all, I was lucky and have managed to carry 19st fairly well, but wanna see my hips and get rid of my muffin top! I've got size 9 feet so I'm never gotta be tiny saying that Namoi Campbell has size 9's too! but wouldn't want her mood swings!!!

Must check out this glucosamine tip - thanks for that.

Is it compulsory to wear helmets? I only ask cos I spent years cycling happily around Amsterdam (used to live there) without one and would really hate to have to wear one. I ride motorbikes and I love riding trikes as I don't have to wear a helmet on them....:D

TBH... I'm a driver! and I know how inconsiderate people are!!! Cause I cycle to work I'm on the roads etc.. and I figured for the sake for £15 and the rest of my life I'd rather just wear a helmet! I'm sure it's the same risk as not wearing your car seat belt!

Wow k9cuddles that was one seriously impressive & inspirational post you just did there! Well done I think you are truly fabulous.

freebird....lucky you living in Amsterdam for a while! Would love that!
But stay lucky hon and wear a helmet. I have come off my bike (and know plenty of cyclists who have also come of their bikes) and if I hadn't of been wearing mine I am pretty sure I would have been in a very bad way. As it was I was lucky with just a broken elbow.

Don't let it put you off! You won't notice it after a while and it'll keep you warmer in colder snaps.

K9 Cuddles- you are an inspiration (or should that be thinspiration!) and have acheived such a lot. I think you are right and that a change in lifestyle is needed rather than a quick fix diet, plus gradually making small changes.

Well done on the running, you are doing really well, 8K is very impressive especially as you have not been running long. I know what you mean about the super fit lycra shorts wearing people though, puts me off a bit as well! Plus the fact that there are full length mirrors in front of the treadmills at the gym. Why is that???
