Another way of losing weight is supposed to be having a good old de-clutter and tidy up. Looking round my pigsty of a flat at the moment, I suspect this too may have a grain of truth!
Still - I've put myself in the position of having to have a clear out as I'm expecting people round next weekend. Better get a wiggle on!
I couuldn't agree with you more Minnie. The bigger the mess my flat gets in the bigger I seem to become (mind you, having three very messy kids doesn't help much).:DMurphy's No More Pies Club Member 237 Start Weight - 13st 4.4lb (joined 07/07/08) Target Weight - 9st 4lbCurrent weight 13st 4lb (14/07/08) Lost: 0lb - 56lb to go0 -
Ok i thought it was time to post a few little tips for people wanting to lose weight. People have helped me out here a lot and being a personal trainer i thought i would give my two pence worth.
Before anyone says i know there is a DFW and FFW topic but i thought it would have got lost in there.
Most peoples main problem
The main problem people have when it comes to trying to lose weight is they feel that just exercising or dieting is going to help them. Ok so it will help you but you will not get the desired results you want. You need a healthy balance of both, so its no good eating really well and sitting down doing NOTHING all day, and like wise where is the logic in going the gym then eating a McDonalds followed by a KFC.
Dietery Tips
Ok so what is healthy. In my job the amount of people that say, i just eat salad and fruit all day and im losing weight which is great. my response is OK, so where are you getting your carbs, protein and fats from? and yes we all need carbs, proteins and fats at all different levels. The main problem with diets is they dramitically reduce the calories you take in, which is all good and well, but what happens when youve lost the weight you wanted to and start eating more food, hey presto you put the weigh back on, hence the term yo-yo dieting. the other problem is when people just stop eating, your body needs protein and fats to get energy, if its not getting them from your food intake then it will break down your muscles and bones eventually, and yes your heart is a muscle aswell.
What you need to do is have a balanced diet, and breakfast is a MUST. porridge or muesli, something like that is good as it is slow releasing energy, also breakfast will boost your metabalism a lot so this is definitely a good thing. So many people skip breakfast but would you drive your car with no petrol, i didnt think so, so why on earth do people use their body with no fuel (food). you should then have a healthy snack, chicken salad or something and a good tea, such as meat and veg. now some people may be thinking well what do i eat all the rest of the time?? well thats the fun bit, you pick at nuts (plain not dry roasted or the like) and fruit, and drink PLENTY of fluids, preferably water. now the bit everyone will enjoy, it actually does your body good to once a week break your cycle of eating like a very healthy person. these are known as cheat days, and you eat stuff u have stopped yourself eating all week such as chips and chocolate, now what this does is stops you from craving all these luxeries throughout the week.
ok some things that a good and things trying to avoid
Good- Brown rice
- Brown Pasta
- Fruit
- George Foreman (ok these can be expensive but i sold some stuff on ebay and its the best thing ive got, £50 for top of range on amazon and u can even fry an egg on it
- nuts
- tuna in springwater
- vegatables
- grilled meat without seasoning
- granary bread
- backed potatoes
- fruit juice (natural)
- boiled vegs, steamed if available
Things to avoid- you all know cakes, chocolates, sweets etc but thought id put it on
- White pasta and rice (bleached and full of rubbish)
- any fizzy drinks including alcohol, sorry
- diet products arent always great, diet coke etc is worse for you as it has sweetners and the low fat sandwiches for example usually have more calories and bad carbs than the normal ones
- white bread is VERY bad
- cooking in loads of oil and butter, get the george foreman, or the hulk hogan lol
Alternatives to gyms
I know a lot of people on here are on a budget (including me, i get my gym membership free) and gyms can be expensive. you dont need a gym to exercise, and no one can say there is not a park nearby or even a canal to go walking. walking for 20-30 mins a day at a decent pace is going to be very beneficial for you. Dont like weights?? well theres loads of options you can do, press ups and tricep dips on a park bench, do step ups on a curb, do shuttles inbetween a few trees so the trees act as your markers, get a dynaband (around £1) and stand on it and pull each end up for bicep curls. little things like walking the shops or waking to pick up the kids can make all the difference. I know exercise is not everyones cup of tea but it can be that easy to do, and it clears you head and relieves stress aswell. fitballs are great and usually come with a list of exercises
Overall
ok so the main points are, make sure you have a balanced diet AND exercise. if you do one dont think you can then neglect the other it just wont work. i know its hard at times, as some weeks you u will find it harder than others as u wont feel like ur progressing, hang in there, it may take a little longer than these stupid diets but you WILL keep it off sticking to this lifestyle
One other thing i noticed was, a lot of people are obsessed with their weight, it should be how u feel and how your clothes fit, ok wieght does indicate certain losses but you can actually put weight on when exercising.
Hope this is of some help to some people, just felt like giving something back to people that have helped me0 -
Thanks so much for that Biglad.
You do realise you will be inundated with questions now frum us fatties dont you?
Here's my starter for ten. I have been walking everywhere for the last few months. Walk the kids to school, then home. Walk to work (where I walk round a lot) then home, then walk to school to pick up kids and, yes, I walk home.
It's not made an ounce of difference to me...I'm still a fat bu66er
What am I doing wrongIs it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:
