it may well be worth a try, as many drivers are pretty generic. Do the options in device manager give you the option to reinstall drivers ?? if so, might be worth trying to reinstall from the XP disc first, as many windows drivers will operate a lot of hardware. Try them one at a time, and choose the instal from cd option....it almost sounds like you may have done a repair install as opposed to a full one.

..another trick to try is: uninstall a device in device manager, then reboot and let windows attempt to auto-detect and re-install the device....quite often works, make sure you have the xp disk and your mum's driver disk to hand when you try it...

Morning GunJack I tried to do a repair install, but it didn't work so ended up doing a full one. When I click the device it gives me the option to reinstall, trying to install now, have put both cds in and it hasn't worked. Should I attempt to delete it now?

My bet is that the Windows XP disk maybe an old pre SP1, SP2, SP3 version.

You might have to download SP1, SP2 onto USB stick, an ipod or a CD and pass it onto the laptop. The files are about 600MB each.

We had this on a Toshiba SP6000 laptop, the backup disk was from 2002 which wireless was not a big thing then. So we updated to SP1, then SP2 and the wireless all came good...

You can check what standard of XP is load by clicking...

    Start Menu
    Control Panel
    System

Then on the box, it will say the Name of the computer, the memory size etc, then below that there will be 'Windows XP Professional SP1, SP2, SP3 etc'

@GJ, I tried deleting one device and when I restarted the system, it said new hardware found and asked for the cd. I clicked cancel and checked in device manager and it was back with an exclamation mark.

@Alias, I've checked and it's xp home edition version 02! Do I have to download them all, or just the latest sp?

I would go with SP1, SP2 and SP3 seperately then burn them to a CD for future purposes.

Create a driver / apsw disk and keep with the XP disks. Ideal.

Service packs are cumulative - you shouldn't need any of the earlier ones, especially if you're slipstreaming. SP3 might not install on a pre-SP1 copy of Windows XP, but unless the disc you used is over six years old that won't be a problem.

To see what service pack you currently have, press [WinKey]+[Pause/Break] on your keyboard. If the words 'Service Pack' followed by a 1, 2 or 3 are not visible in the box that appears, you have the original release from 2001.

    *update*
OK, I tried to put on sp 3, but I needed sp1. The only sp1 I can find is sp1a, and it needs to connect to the internet to download?

I'm now uploading all the drivers and will put those on and then try sp1a again
