(This post has been edited to include the files, links, and programs you will need to slipstream your windows XP with Service Pack 3 and most of the later updates and, optionally, all your drivers too.)

Wa-a-a-ay back in the mists of time I found a place that gave precise instructions on how to stream my windows sp1 disk with the then new sp2 download to produce a completely working installation disk to sp2 standard.

I need to do this again so that I can have an installation disk that's up to sp3.

Having just had to install windows (to sp2) on my nice shiny new computer I've also had to spend quite a while working through all the updates for sp3 and then go grab any new stuff since then.

Is there an easy way to create an installation disk that's as up to date as my current windows is?

Thanks very much to everyone who has helped me with this. What follows is a summary of what you need and how to use it and includes links to the proper help files/pages should you need them. And you will. ;)
First: Don't try this when you're tired after a hard day's work - or a day out with the kids! :)

Second: You need to create some new folders and I've found that it helps to be organised about it. So open your windows explorer and on your c:\ drive make a new folder. I called mine ---> Windows Slipstream.
Click on the new folder and create the following sub folders:-
nlite <--- where a copy of your installation disk will go
nlite disk safe <---we'll copy nlite into here later
slipstream programs
windows KBnnnnnn update files
windows Service Pack SP3
windows slipstream MSE page
Third: Pop back to this page and use "File">>"Save as" and save this page complete into the windows slipstream MSE page folder. That way you can work off-line and still read all this if you need to.

Fourth: You need to download a few bits and pieces...
You need a program to do the work:-

http://www.nliteos.com/download.html

Download and install the program into a new directory off your c:\windows slipstream\slipstream programs\... so it should be:-
c:\windows slipstream\slipstream programs\nlite

And the help file for it is here:-

http://www.nliteos.com/guide/index.html

Oh... and a WARNING... my first couple of attempts crashed and froze my system during the process of slipstreaming the original with the service pack. It turned out (not that it told me) that Zone Alarm really didn't like this. So you might want to get off line (later) and turn off all your various resident monitoring stuff. (That's why we saved this page in your folders so that you can view it off-line)

You also need a copy of the Win XP sp3 exe file saved in a folder on your disk.

WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe

Download and save it in your windows Service Pack SP3 folder.

It helps too to have all the updates (as in KB123456) that have been issued since sp3 was put out - otherwise you'll end up on automatic updates for ages. This page has a handy zipped fairly up to date collection:-

http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/updatepack-sp3.html

Download and save it in your windows KBnnnnnn update files folder.

You do not need to unpack this file - just dump it into the insert window when you are prompted for updates. (instructions!)

There are two basic situations where you might need your installation disk...
  1. To do a complete new installation on a brand new computer, or on your existing computer where you have made some major changes to hardware.
  2. To repair or re-install on your existing computer when, for example, using system restore doesn't work.
So in fact it's handy to have two versions of your installation disk. One which is essentially an up to date version with SP3 and subsequent updates and absolutely nothing else customised. In other words a clean and unsullied version because if you've made major changes to your computer you don't want to be loading drivers for your OLD bits onto your new ones.
Once you've got this disk done, then yes, run nlite again and this time you can add all your drivers and even customise language, keyboard, time, desktop and so on. But remember that you will ONLY be able to use this version on your EXISTING computer and UNCHANGED hardware.

To add all your current drivers into a customised installation you can use the following program:- Download and install the program into a new directory off your c:\windows slipstream\slipstream programs\... so it should be:-
c:\windows slipstream\slipstream programs\Double Driver

You need to make very sure that you have no viruses worms or trojans on your machine BEFORE you start to make your slipstreamed installation disk. The last thing you want to do is install a whole bunch of nasties in your brand new windows installation should you need to use the disk. Read the sticky at the top of this forum and treat your machine as if you did have a virus and be sure that your drive(s) have been swept clean.

That's the preparation done. Now for the job in hand.

Run nlite with your installation disk in your CD/DVD drive. Follow the prompts and point it at your
c:\Windows Slipstream\nlite
folder when asked where to put the files. This is your working folder.

Note: If you don't have a disk you may find the files in your recovery partition. See your computer help thing.

Now, since you will probably want to do this more than once - use windows explorer to select then right-click and COPY all the files and folders from nlite into the nlite disk safe one. (This is because if you need to, you can point nlite to your copy folder instead of your CD/DVD drive which is faster than having to use your disk again. Smart huh? :))

Once done nlite prompts you to choose what sort of things you want on your disk. Turn ALL the lights green. You don't actually have to DO them all, you can skip bits later, but at least you'll get to see what it can do. (Especially when it comes to customising your windows before you install it - so you don't have to sit there like a muppet turning American into proper English all over the place.)

Then it will ask for your Service Pack which you should have saved into windows Service Pack SP3

Note: If you have a disk of SP3 you can probably put it in a drive and point to it when nlite asks - so you may not need to download the file I just linked to.

nlite now slipstreams the two together (which is where you might get a crash from your resident antivirus software). IF SO... once you get back to running again with your anti-virus off - you need to EMPTY the nlite folder (because nlite will have changed some of the files) - and will be able to point nlite at your nlite disk safe when it asks for the windows installation files instead of your CD?DVD drive.

Note:
After completing the slipstream of your basic disk and the Service pack - it leaves the screen saying "Give the location of the Service Pack" and leaves the "Select" button visible. Don't do it again... you'll see that the "Next" button is now live.

When it asks for any updates click on the insert tab (at the bottom right of the window) and go get the zipped file in your windows KBnnnnnn update files folder. Something like...

RVMUpdatePackSP3_1.0.3.7z

As I said earlier - you don't need to unpack it. nlite will do that.

You can now pretty much skip through everything else (except the bit where it asks you to select a list of things for functionality (see the nlite guide) which I have selected all of them) to make a basic Windows XP SP3 installation disk which is also pretty much up to date.

It will act just like your original one.

That's it - you now have a basic Windows XP installation disk. :)
Don't forget to re-start any antivirus and monitoring programs that you may have had to switch off while doing this. It's probably best just to reboot.

Finally... If you are still a long way behind you can go directly to Microsoft's Update Service rather than wait for automatic updates to catch up.

You can, however, having mastered all this, make an installation disk that is fully customised for your computer hardware AND for all your personal preferences and tweaks...

Before repeating all the the above:-
  1. delete all the files in your c:\Windows Slipstream\nlite folder
  2. create a directory in your windows slipstream folder called driver backups
  3. Run the Double Driver program...
  • Click on "Scan"
  • Click on "Backup"
  • Choose the option to save (ALL) your drivers in "Multiple folders"
  • Save to c:\Windows Slipstream\driver backups
Now, when you re-run the nlite program to make your fully customised installation disk you can...
  1. Tell the program that your original disk files are in c:\Windows Slipstream\nlite disk safe
  2. When you reach the Drivers bit - point at your c:\Windows Slipstream\driver backups folder
  3. And further along you have the options to customise the windows installation, files, language, keyboard, time zone, desktop and so on as much as you want.
So this is the basics of it all. Each of the programs involved have their own help files and a LOT more options and possibilities than I've mentioned here. It's up to you as to how much you want to play with them :)

Please note: There are alternative programs and methods listed further down this thread - I've just posted the method I found easiest (in the end :))

Once again - many thanks to everyone who has helped here. It would have taken me forever to work this lot out on my own.

    yes Google nLite

this will allow you to stream the latest service from your existing CD therefore creating an .ISO image which you can burn.

you can even automate the install so that all you do is insert the CD, walkway and have a brew, return 30 mins later, job done.

i use this among other methods for installs - saves time and hassle

I'm off to have a look thanks...

In the meantime I've just this second found this page:-

    http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstream-service-pack-3-into-your-windows-xp-installation-cd

So I've also learned that the correct technical term for this is "slipstream" :)

And the link fits in nicely with the nlite stuff, duunit? :D

Hmmm.... kept getting sent round in circles when trying to download the sp3 file (and the link in nlite didn't work) but I finally found this...

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=2fcde6ce-b5fb-4488-8c50-fe22559d164e&displayLang=en

Which is a download of the iso for the sp3 installation disk.

    hi there

That says for IT bods and developers?

Actually, there's not a lot of difference between the pack at 316MB and the iso at 544MB... well, they're both damn huge!

I've got to say the hacker site doesn't quite gel with what nlite actually wants. nlite just says to search for "this" and doesn't actually say "PUT yer DARN windows installtion disk INTO yer DARN BLASTED cd drive ya MUPPET!!"

I'm tired. It's been a long day tracking down drivers. Drivermax is all very well, but it nicks any drivers that you have that it doesn't FIRST and then only allows you to download ONE per day from THEM. Bar stewards. I need SEVENTEEN!!! And working through the device manager to update drivers is a joke! It found TWO - which is why I only need a mere seventeen others now.

I guess what I'm saying is that my brain hurts. Maybe all this will be much easier tomorrow. Maybe I should just go find a nice easy on line chess tournament to join.

It's the standalone one that you'd use in corporate environment, rather than the home use one on Windows Update which is usually configured to only install what you need based on your update history. You'd need the complete one to use with nline or whatever you're using.

Darn! OK - that does it. I shall read all other replies and tips as they come in during the evening, but I'm not doing another darn thing until tomorrow. I've hit "the wall" for today, and I'll do a whole lot better after a good night's sleep.
