• I went on the site and had to type in some letters and numbers that I could see as well as my mobile number and within seconds a code came through to my mobile phone. I typed the numbers into the box on the website and it then said that I was ex directory. :T

You're very lucky

I have done it must be eight times since friday and only once got a nubmer which was 23 hours later and absolutely useless

nothing else

This is disreputable system which only goes to show that our regulators whether they are ofcom, ofgem or offtheirtrolley are useless wastes of money which could be got rid and replaced with something at half the price which could do the job!
• You should raise your concerns and complaints with the ICO, OFCOM and PhonePayplus .. you can do so at each of their websites ....

Have already done

ICO and OFCOM are quite frankly poor at consumer complaints and actually treat them with disdain

The later has always been a bit of a white elephant as already posted elsewhere on the site
• had this email sent through from a reasonable source (i.e. not usually gullible person).
Some of you maybe aware that the newly formed direct enquiry 118800 are forming a National Directory of all mobile phone numbers. This goes live very soon if not already
This information contains your address and so on. 3rd party sales courtesy of No 10 Downing Street I understand.
To have your mobile phone number removed from this directory.
Text the letter E in capital only. To 118800.
Any questions re this contact www.phonepayplus.org.uk
Or contact them on 0800500212 and they will advise you of this new 118800 directory and so forth.
do you think it's genuine or a scam?
• bah... I searched for 118800 and nothing came back :-s
• As a repesentative of 118 800 I'd just like provide a few facts and some reassurances

118800 has launched a service with mobile phone listings. But we connect people who want to be put in touch - we don't give out mobile phone numbers.
We always announce the caller to the person in the directory and that person can choose to take the call or not.
We have a strict privacy policy where we never sell data to third parties so telemarketers can never get your number from us.
This service will be useful to people who've lost the number of a friend or colleague - or simply don't have it on them - and need to get in touch.

I hope that helps.

:confused:Help!
How do I stop unwanted text messages
on my mobile? This link gives info about a company recently creating directories allowing the sending of messages to all and sundry: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/telecoms/article6459097.ece
We have tried unsuccessfully to find out from network provider how to opt out of it but they claim no knowledge.Thanks.

I think you're talking about two different things.

1. Nuisance texts
2. People being able to contact you using the new mobile phone directory service.

To deal with 1, speak to your phone provider.
To deal with 2 (although personally I'm not worried) go here: http://www.118800.co.uk/faqs.html#privacy
I just looked myself up, and I'm not listed :)
My TV is broken!
