There are a lot of seriously worried and misinformed people on this site.
Firstly, no marketing company is going to pay £1 to be put through to someone who simply has the option not even to take the call.
Secondly, any marketing company who wanted to contact you on your mobile can already do so by buying precisely the same marketing list that this company bought.
The truth is that the only people who want to pay £1 to contact you are likely to be family and friends ie someone you already know.
If people want to avoid their mobile number becoming known to marketing people then they should take more care when filling in forms and texting numbers off bottle tops to enter competitions etc.If you're on this company's list, its because your number is already public property.
I'm not sure why people think this is shocking, its only the same as directory enquiries. And no I don't work for the company in question.
Radio1 Newsbeat this morning was funny. They interviewed a random thicko (where do they find them??) about this service and her response was something about "all the stalkers out there getting your mobile number". As Chris Moyles pointed out a stalker would need to know your name and address anyway to get your mobile. An example of a misinformed person who is unfortunately given the vote...0 -
Is the service already available?
It goes live next Friday (June 18th), but a test website is up and running now where you can try out the database.
Spent a long time on the phone to them to opt out last week, checked just now and found OH. You will need to double check everything. Answers the question whether they are trustworthy. More frustration time on the phone for me...0 -
You can see from my post count that I tend to read more than I post , but I thought it was time to put in my tuppence worth (As long as it's not seen as a poor use of money!!!)
It seems that you are not only making a statement without evidence to back it up but are contradicting yourself. Do we actually know that they obtained the numbers from market research companies? Even if they did, it's reasonable to assume that some of those numbers may belong to celebs or govornment officials, who may have contacted the company to ensure they are not included. To claim they are dishonest without evidence to back it up is somewhat reckless.

Sorry mate but you are wrong, it said on their own website that they had been given files with govt and celebs numbers. It also says that they have got numbers from market research companies.
i suggest you do a bit more reading.
btw it looks like they've had to amend their website now re the celb bit. I for one pointed out to them their error as it put the wind up quite a few of my customers.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
Ha Ha the website has now crashed! Obviously inundated with people like me wanting my details REMOVED that should NEVER have been added in the first place - a disgrace and I hope no-one uses this service, promptly putting said company out of business.0

I have specific reasons to not want my mobile number being given out to people, but I must say, I really don't have any problem at all with this service. My number won't be given to anyone unless I want them to have it, so it's fine by me.0

I am taking no action until/if I am contacted, but should I be and should I wish to opt out of having my number listed there is a major problem for me and others like me as I have a ban on incoming/outgoing texts on my phone due to a previous incident. That was being repeatedly sent unsolicited junk emails and being charged £7 for receiving each one. being unemployed at the time (and finding that repeated requests for the senders to stop were ignored) I demanded my service provider put a blanket ban on all texts to/from my number or i would go elsewhere.
So in cases where a text is the only way to contact someone, I and others like me, have to go online - if we have a pc which not everyone does (no, really, it's true!).0 -
This is soooo dodgy! I just did a search on their site for myself (I sent the text yesterday to be made ex-directory) and surprise surprise, they've found me! I then searched for my mum who has not been on the site and they couldn't find her, so I agree, I think they're using this to harvest numbers, damn.0
-
I've tried 3 times also and haven't received any texts back - looks like there might be a pattern here - I wonder if they're deliberately making it hard for you to opt-out?
I think they've been very busy, since everyone has been emailing everyone they know with this, I got it yesterday and received the text back within a few minutes. that said, I seem to be in their directory still!0 -
Had a look but didnt check my number, im not paying a £1 to find out if im on there. Also my OH and daughters numbers are in my name. So someone searching me will get 3 options.
Blimey I reckon they are getting a lot of free publicity at the moment! I suppose also that if it was an emergency, for example, someone like a neighbour needed to contact me if my house was on fire (after calling 999 natch) and they haven't got my mobile number it could actually be quite handy!0 -

If you know either the name of someone or the street or area where they live you can get the rest of the info over the web in seconds - no cost. Now they can get your number too!0
