  • As the daughter of a canny Scots woman, my Mum always had a soup pot on the go, and we always started our meals with soup and then the main course. Puddings were usually on Sundays, usually rice pud or apple pie. Bearing in mind that it was the end of the war and things were in short supply because of rationing I think my Mum was an amazing lady who seemed to feed her three children on next to nothing .O.K. we didn't have steak, (in fact I was 19 and married before I actually tasted steak) and a lot of things were a bit on the stodgy side at times but we never went to bed hungry.
.As a child I was a skinny little thing who ate like a horse and never put an ounce on, Oh to be like that again :D .I still like to have soup for starters and a main course, especially in the winter.
My Mums 'tattie soup' was a meal in itself, you could almost stand your spoon up in it.
  • 10 (MASSIVE) portions :D. I went with the 2 ladlefuls per person and was careful to keep them level but still have 4 bags to be frozen with more than 500mls in each one! D'oh!

Next time 3 ladles for 2 people??
  • Hi there,

I was hoping one of you lovelies could help me...I really need to sort out the family's portion sizes, as I think they're massively out of kilter. I've googled etc, and can only find out fruit and veg sizes (which I know already), or helpful things like '3 tbsp of cooked rice'. I'd like to know the uncooked amound ideally...does anyone know where I can find this information....I'd be eternally greatful!

I have just the thing for you ;)LINKY

It's great, you can enter the amount of adults and children you are cooking for and it tells you how much using everyday measures like a mug or a tbsp.

The other thing you can try is to follow the packet recommendations for a serving size. For example rice is usually 75g. I find they overestimate though.
  • Thanks so much Thriftylady - I knew I'd seen something like it somewhere..but despite my best efforts, the exact page was elluding me :D

    Thanks again!

If it helps anyone I use 60g of pasta or rice for a lady and 80g for a man or growing child. As a questimate it roughly works out at a gripped handful (ie. not a scoop!) is 20g. My top tip - buy some cheap small scales that you can keep o hand for weighing out portions - it really helps me! and it helps cut the cals too!

Scales are so handy! I think they really help keep the portions down. Now there are usually instructions on the pack but if not I found this table when I was researching portions today clicky
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T
  • Made Chilli again in my new (HUGE) Le Crueset-with 1.5kg of meat (had to take some out to make a little bolognase-huge le creuset was possibly not going to be huge enough and didn't want to risk the overflow like before) onions/garlic/celery/carrots, red lentils, 6 tins tomatoes (4 in chilli 2 in bolognase) 4 tins of beans and some peppers and mushrooms.
I got 20 portions (good sized hungry people portions) :j
am quite proud as have doubled number or portions with only 50% extra meat
Still not as good as some of you OSers, but still :D
  • I ususaly cook for 1 as well - cook up and big btach and freeze single portions. I portion of whatever it is is avbout 2 ladel full. Regarding rice and pasta portions - pasta for me is 1 handfull and rice about 2 handfuls. Snowy
    :j I feel I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe :j
