Hi Frankie - long time no see!

I use 250g of mince for me, DH, DD 6 & DS 5 - if I'm doing a stew or something I use oats to bulk it out and (depending how many portions DH eats:rolleyes:) can normally feed me and the kids the following day as well.

    Hi all,
am currently in process of making up a VAT of bolognese sauce, is bubbling away in a 24cm le creuset (about 5l worth I reckon) reducing.
OH is out so will be able to happily portion it up to freeze. I used 1kg mince, 3 onions, 2 carrots, 2 sticks of celery(blitzed in food processor so very small and not obviously in the sauce IYKWIM?) and 4 tins plum toms. (oh and some mushrooms and peppers & a large splash red wine :))
How may portions should I aim to be freezing? (often find freeze portions that are way too big :()
Am planning on freezing some in bags to have as spag bol, but also freeze some mixed with cooked pasta as an instant ready meal for OH when works weekends or for my lunches. Would a portion be equiv to one ladleful? Or is that stingy
(OH has BIG appetite, I am trying to get us both to lose weight so restricting portion size-and he tends to get my leftovers too which usually fills him :rotfl:)

I am trying to do the same, although my 7yr old ds eats nearly as much as me and dh so I tend to go for two ladlefuls for each adult 1 1/2 for oldest ds and 1 for youngest ds...I usually find this works out about right.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Just for me I do a ladleful. Tend to top up on the spaghetti and just use the sauce to wet it!

But how big is a ladle? I have one of those scrapy round the pan types from Lakeland, suspect it is bigger than average.

    hiya

when I do this, I work on filling a takeaway sized container ( the shallower ones) for two people, and this always seems about right. I bought the tubs, sturdier versions of the takeaway ones form a pound shop for 5 or 6 I think, and they have been great!

In a normal ladle, I'd say that a portion is about 1 and a half for a big appetite, 1 for a smaller appetite!

thanks all, in typical obsessive compulsive manner(OH tends to call me Monica :() I have now measured my ladle which works out at just over 100mls (I reckon 2 of them would be 1 american cup)
For a big appetite and main meal (usually with 100g pasta) do you reckon 3 ladles which be ok for 2? Obviously we can bulk up with salad and (maybe) bread :)
and for frozen "ready meals" with 75g ish of pasta 1 ladle? I have a lot of those microwavable takeaway tubs, which I have frozen stuff in before-they get a little brittle but I presume thats ok as long as I don't drop when frozen lol :)

Hi, I would be interested to know how many portions you got, I did a quick calculation on Tesco website, excluding the mushrooms and wine (we will have some in already :rotfl: ) it came to about £9.50, sounds reasonable to me
