Portion size? Depends on the cost of the ingredients:rotfl: :rotfl: Sorry that's not helpful:o
Seriously, I use 500gms ( 1lb) mince for a meal for 4. But that is feeding 4 adults, and doesn't seem to matter how many veggies etc it is bulked out with. I have until very recently been feeding 3 men and me, so their portions were rather larger than mine.
Tonight we had veal, first time ever for me. Now at £25 a kilo  we had tiny, nay minuscule portions of meat ( fed 3, 2 males and me:D ) but had it served with new potatoes and half a plate of stir-fried veggies. ( It was delicious, and if I'm ever rich we would have it quite often;) )
Sausages, my men would eat 4 large ones each, I'm not that keen so 1 would do me, but then I'd have extra veg.
I think to cut costs without cutting portion sizes, you'll have to try to bulk up cheaper ingredients while downsizing the meat element. So overall, the plate will be as full but with the cheaper part of the meal.
I'm technically hopeless, so don't hold your breath for me, but I will try to take a photo or two later in the week.:DYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Hi jennywren,
There's an older thread that should help you so I've added your thread to it to keep all the replies together.
We eat quite big portions in our house too so I'll try to post a few pics for you in the next couple of days.

Crickey!! I thought I was doing well, cutting down on portion size. I measure most things now and have 3 handfulls of pasta (I have large hands) 250g spaghetti or 1lb of potatoes for me only, mmm back to the drawing board me thinks.0

I think "portion control" probably counts as a swear word chez ceridwen. Personally - pasta for instance is 5 oz per person and rice is 100 grams - and I will still be heading of for more food at the end of a main course with those portions. I think those probably count as pretty big portions - but unfortunately my appetite isnt exactly small. When I hear of people going off their food my first reaction is envy - I think thats probably happened to me for a matter of days over the whole course of my life so far:D One thing I find pretty annoying is that I got hungrier for several days per month - and that still happens now, even though I'm "a certain age".
Thank goodness my metabolism is pretty efficient - but I'm still about to go on yet another diet (not because I'm fat - but because I choose to be slim, rather than "okay").0 -
Crumbs, more than fourteen months on and still very little reduction in portion sizes chez nous!Resolution:

Purpleivy - thanks for that! I think I got 2 questions right!0 -
Oh that makes me feel a bit better - I only got one right. Cooking for one seems to make large inevitable for certain things. Rice and noodles tend to be the worst offenders and since i don't like either cold i always seem to be faced with the eat it or chuck it dilemma.
Probably why i eat more pasta - i've never had problems with measuring it.April Grocery Challenge: £250/£127.530 -
