I am loosing weight at the moment and I've started weighing everything and calorie counting. I think some portion sizes on packets can definitely be too big, others about right. AT the end of the day I think it is important to have a good knowledge of your energy needs and the amount in different things. I know my husband has alot more muesli than the packet portion, but as long as he eats a balanced amount over the day and doesn't exceed his daily energy requirement then there is nothing wrong with a larger portion. I think alot of studies have shown how portion sizes have got bigger, as well as people getting bigger.

I have started increasing the veg that goes in my food so my portions seem bigger. I've just put a curry in the SC and doubled the quantities of onions and tomatoes in it as I think it tastes just as good and the curry goes that little bit further.

I'm going to make a fish pie in a tick and make sure I add lots of frozen peas to it to bulk it out a bit.

  • We eat huge portions and making your own bread doesn't help as the slices are enormous!

I have started serving smaller portions on smaller plates, but where possible give everyone a slice of HM bread with their meal, doesnt work with everything but it does with most, eg stew, smaller portion with huge chunk of bread to mop up the gravy, pizza of spag bog served with Hm galic bread, no one complained yet, and they havent asked for seconds, just a little worried that the Bm is going to put the white flag up !!!!

We use slightly smaller plates for better portion control OR you can fill up really fast on plenty of vegetables. Make your veggies the biggest portion on the plate.

    hi all

One of the things I can never really manage to get right is portion size. Its only a few things but I always make too much and it ends up going binward.
    the key culprits are

potatoes ( mash, roasts, always do too many and it doesnt save well)
    rice
    pasta
dried soya mince ( the one from holland & barrett)

Its never enough for a full portion, sometimes the rice is, so I freeze that in a box for OH to take with leftover curries for work lunches.

Woud like to get this right in 07, its one area where I can see my wastefulness and im not impresssed with myself!!!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I sometimes actually deliberately produce too much of some meals. I cook for three (there are two of use most of the time) and freeze the third meal for 'ready meals' or packed lunches. It uses the same energy to make a three portion meal as it does to make a two portion meal.

However, I do weigh ingredients when I want to just make just the right amount. I find a handful of dried pasta per person works. Potatoes, I judge it as being the same as a jacket potato's worth. However I do make a panful of mash - it reheats fine the next night.

I find that by getting the amount right at the beginning helps. I use a jug, hands or mug or scales depending on waht I am cooking.

So I suggest you wiegh or use same measuring jug, noting weights/level till the quantity is correct and then, you'll never be wrong again!

My mother always counts the tatties !!! But there is never any waste!
