I find that I follow roughly the ingredient proportions that my mother used to use for our family of 4, add loads more veg and somehow it just about translates into dinner for me + OH and if I'm really lucky, a spare portion for the freezer - more likely a "lunch-size" portion rather than a full dinner!

OH does manual work and doesn't stop for about 12 hours so he needs loads of calories to keep him going but I'm not sure how I'm not the size of a barn! I read some of the threads on here suggesting that folks have, eg. soup+bread or something-on-toast for a quick and easy dinner and I am amazed that they find that sufficiently filling - it would count as the snack to put you on until dinner is ready in this house!

I used to have a friend who made me feel like a real pig for the amount that I eat at dinner times (in the days before I met OH). When I went on holiday with her, I found that she was continuously grazing between meals which is why she never wanted to each much at mealtimes and I felt a whole lot better about having a big appetite. I guess "portion size" largely comes down to how many calories you need, what sort of foods you eat and how often.

Hiya,I heard a portion size is a handful of something as it is directly in proportion to your body size? X

We were discussing this yesterday as SiL said she only got 2 meals (for 2 desk job adults a 10 year old and a 6 year old) from 1.5kg of beef. Tonight I made chilli with 400g mince, 1/2 bunch celery, 1 lge leek, 1 tin toms, 6 lge toms and a tub of kidney beans and one of chick peas. We have the same family size but DH is larger than BiL and I'm more active than SiL. I have lost weight recently due to my job becoming far, far more active .
I try to go by hand size and palm size for everyone's portions :)

According to the people who make ready made cheesecake, I suspect it must be about half a nanogram per person.

Anyway, I tend to serve everything in dishes rather than put on plates already and let people eat as much or little as they want. It tends to work out well as some people will be more hungry today and others less. If there are any leftovers they also don't need rescuing from someone's plate where they're mixed up with everything else either, so much nicer to serve again later.

    Hi short_cake,

These existing threads may help to answer your question:

    Portion Sizes !!!

Mince quantity question (stretching and portion sizes)?

I'll add your thread to the first link later.

I was told once that Buddhists (?) only eat as much as will fit in their hands, and I try and go with this. You can even buy a Buddha Bowl!
