Thank you for asking this Q as I think I have been overfeeding us (I am v overweight and he's getting a bit tubby), so I shall think about this a bit more now.0

The other day I used 1lb mince and made two family sized cottage pies (4 portions per pie) and a single serving portion. I added a couple of carrots, onion, a tin of tomatoes and a tin of beans.0

i encountered this site only recently, although it's a couple of years old i think. i imagine it must've been discussed somewhere on the forum many times, as Martin Lewis appears to endorse the campaign:

it contains lots of other useful tips & recipes.
On a slightly tangential note about protein, western diets typically include more protein than is necessary for optimum health. Scroll down this info sheet for the "reference nutrient intake" figures for protein by age/gender

Hiya all,
I was thinking with attempting to be o/s and also on a bit of a waistline reducing mission I would ask for people's opinions on the following, to make sure my portions are normal!
I would like to know how many of each of these things you would dish up for Adults and Children respectively, if you wouldn't mind sparing me five minsI have listed the way it goes in our house and am worried about overportioning! My son is 11 so erring on the older side of child...
Premium Sausages- 2x adults 1x kids (main meal)
Standard Sausages-3x adults 2x kids (main meal)
Premium Fish Fingers-3x adults 2x kids
Cheap Fish Fingers-4x adults 3x kids
Yorkies on a sunday (homemade)- 2x adults, 1x kids
Yorkies purchased frozen- 3x adults, 1x kids
Roast Potatoes-how many do you dish up???
I am worried about getting it all wrong....I know you can fill up on veg etc but am concerned about my portions0 -

I always just use 2 sausages regardless really,1 per child,2 per adult, prob the same for the fish fingers, yorkies would also be 2 regardless of shop bought or hm(1 for a child)
roasties prob about 6 quarters per adult,so 1 n half spuds really..
Hope that helps0 -
Hi katylou,
We are three adults (daughter 20), one teen and one (10 year old) child.
-Sausages (premium or standard) I cook four each - there are usually a few left over but they will be used the next day by someone for breakfast or lunch.
-Fish fingers, something we haven't had for years, but I would guess at 3/4 each...if someone wanted less someone else would snaffle the extras or they would be saved to use as leftovers.
-Yorkshire pudding, one good sized homemade one each.
-Roast potatoes, about 20 medium sized ones placed in a dish for everyone to help themselves....when they're gone, they're gone.
There is an existing thread on portion sizes:

I'll add your thread to it later once you've had some more replies.

Hi Katylou
here there is myself, OH (man mountain), DD nearly 15 and DS 11
Sausages Premium or standard 4 for OH, 2myself and children
Fish Fingers 6 OH and 3 for myself and children
Here Roast potatoes and yorkies are everyones fav and portion size goes out the window, as both OH and kids will have about 6 each whether they are HM or shop bought.
I know our portion size is all over the place and since Ive live with OH shopping buget has tripled but I am now trying to address thisGC: £400/ £00 -
I have stopped dishing up dinners, instead it all gets taken out to the table in the pans and we all dish up how ever much we want. The children get small side plates and adults get big plates, i find this stops the kids from moaning (I tended to dish up too much and then argue with them for not eating their dinners)
Seconds and thirds are always available if they want them.
My ds will only eat Yorkies, gravy and carrots so he will have about 6 of them0 -
Theres only myself and DS (nearly 4) here.
For sausages I would do 2 or 3 (3 if I am really hungry) for me and 2 for DS. I would prob cook a whole pack of 8 though and use the rest in a dish the next day (sarnies, pasts etc
). This would be regardless of make.
For fish fingers I would prob follow the same as for sausages but wouldnt cook the whole pack although I have been known to use any left over ones (gone cold) mushed up with worcester table sauce on toast for breakfast the next day:o - yummy yummy yummy. Again this is regardless of make.
Yorkies I LOVE!! Still would only cook 2 for myself and prob 2 for DS in the hope he'd leave one
Roaties I would only have 3 bits of potato and poss only 1 or 2 for DS. We both love our roast dinners but have a little meat, few pots and plently of veg :TEmma
