I allow for 100g of meat or fish in a main meal - even of you are combining your 2 servings in 1 then 250g is still 2 and half servings and over time the additional calories will take their toll...

Also, I would imagine half a pound of meat in one meal would take your stomach a while to digest.

The love food hate waste website has a portion size calculator that may help: perfect portions (for meat/poultry/fish You'll need to select a category from the full list).

And this earlier thread has lots of advice

    Portion Sizes !!!

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.

    Hi Mrs E

I tend to go on visuals so meat/fish is about the size of a box of large matches or pack of cards per person.

When I was first married in the early 60's I bought 8oz of meat for the 2 of us for dinner that day. I think supermarkets have made this more difficult to do these days. For instance you can no longer buy 1/2lb of meat (mince, sausages, braising steak) but have to buy large packets of the stuff ie normally 500g. Over the years eating/shopping habits have changed and I got into the habit of buying these packs for the 2 of us. No wonder we put on the pounds. (well I have anyway). Once I found this site I became aware of what I was doing so now I split the packs into 2 before freezing so we can't be tempted to eat more than we should. I have upped the veg to compensate. I am moving soon to somewhere that has a real butcher so I am going to try to go back to shopping how I used to do both for MS and losing weight reasons.

I watched a programme a few years ago where a nutritionalist said as a rough guide at each meal have a portion of protein and one portion of carbs based on the size of one of your own closed fists. You could add as much veggies/fruit as you liked but obviously aiming for the 5 a day as a min. The idea with the fist thing is it covers all the family members. I agree we used to eat too much meat. I made a chili tonight for 5 of us and only used about 350grs of mince altogether, padded out with plenty of beans/lentils/tomatos and chopped veggies and served with cous cous for a change. This did a meal tonight and there is enough left for probably 3 or 4 more servings so will either have tommorow with baked spuds or on the side of potato wedges and salad.

As well as helping the waistline the biggest bonus is the reduction in cost.

    Hi

For me it depends what I'm eating. If I'm cooking a steak or pork chop I'd probably go 6 - 8 oz each but they are a treat meal.

If I'm cooking a casserole, stir fry, spag bol etc alot less and bulk out with beans, veg etc.

For me at the end of the day eating too much meat isn't good for you, contains alot of calories and is expensive.

We would have a pack of mince for 4, so about 110g to 125g depending size of pack, a chicken breast or pork chop. Generally then 4 to 6 oz for evening meal. Love food says 140g per adult.

Just a question on portion sizes... I batch cook meat dishes when I get chance, as OH eats meat and I don't. I'm thinking of the chillis and bolognaise based foods particularly, and I do sneak lots of veggies in there too and freeze left over portions. OH will eat whatever I put in front of him (love him!) and I suspect I over feed him (yes, I know, he isn't a cat, he could say no - but is unlikely to!) so I was wondering what everyone else would consider to be a portion size. If I cook 800g of mince (with extra veggies) for example, how many meals would you expect to get out of that?

Thanks in advance guys, looking forward to being a bit more organised with my batch cooking! :)
