I serve one medium sized pork chop (or two of the little lamb chops) as a portion and fill the plate up with veg and spuds or whatever. Recommended meat portion size is on average the size of a pack of playing cards, yup...about 4oz of meat, or 6oz of fish. It's not particularly healthy to have most of your plate covered by meat.

The way to look at your plate is 1/4 meat, 1/4 carbohydrate and 1/2 veg. So if I was giving hubby chips, chops and peas I'd either have to cover half the plate with peas, which he wouldn't like, or give him two types of veg, which he would like. So next time you give your OH one chop, stick some sweetcorn or ratatouile or mushrooms or onion rings on the side.

A big oval plateful of what?

Or is it empty and that's why the meal works out so cheap? :p:D

  • One chop per adult/teen. Two to three sausages each depending on whether they are chipolatas or not.

I tend not to serve pieces of meat but to opt for diced meats or mince because it is so much easier to stretch.

I often serve sausages in a casserole or made into meatballs or cut up so that I can make a pound of them serve five.

    Lamb or pork?
I wouldn't buy 4 pork chops for £4. I'd buy a joint, a shoulder of pork for £4 and stretch it a lot further.

Lamb chops too, I'd buy a half shoulder for a fiver and make it do a couple of days? There's no real meat on a lamb chop...

My understanding is a portion size of each type of food should be the size of your OWN fist. IE OH should get slightly bigger portions than me and the kids corresponding amounts.
So its a fist size bit of meat, and the same of carbs, and AT LEAST the same of veg/salad. Obviously you can have more veg/salad.

My OH was the same with his meat he loves it, but just recently he has been having some digestive problems and it looks like he has gallstones (waiting on an abdominal scan next week to check his kidneys/liver/gallbladder) and his cholosterol was 8.8!!
Now my Oh would be described as tall and thin, was always very healthy, doesn't smoke, not a big drinker so it can only be all the amount of meat (especially red meat). A shock really he is by no means overweight (6ft 4 and was 12 1/2 stone-has now lost a few pound and is nearer to 12 stone still low for his height).

He doesn't do "that" face anymore so feel free to let OH look at this posting give him more veg and let him moan lol.
Unless the chops were very small one should have been ok.
