Radishes with bare shoulders0 -
When the radishes are ready you will see them slowly push themselves up a bit out of the soil. If you very gently scrape the soil away from the top of the plant you will be able to see how far along the road to swelling up they are0

When do I thin my swedelings out then? They're only weenie at the moment, but I go on holiday next week, and I'm not back until 14th July. Should I do it before I go, or wait until I get back?If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

Before you go.
The smaller they are when you thin them out, the least disturbance to the roots will be caused. Those that are left will then have more space to spread their roots out.
Enjoy your hols......0 -

For example, I have a competition running with my mate to see who can grow the biggest swede by Christmas.
Having only sown the seeds last Monday, in the "vegetable plot", it would appear that things are working - I have little weeny things growing. :j Edit: Technically, I think they're called "swedelings".
I'm reliably informed (by the seed packet) that swede do better with some lime added to the soil. As I didn't add any before I planted them , what's the best way to add some now? And in what form? I don't want to risk hurting the seedlings.
Or weeds?:rotfl:Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

 You've done this before, haven't you?
Nice one, I'll do it this weekend then. How much gap should I leave between swedelings?
And thanks, I will. If I can manage to go a fortnight without fretting about me veg.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Care of Swedes
The seedlings will take about 10 days to emerge. Thin the seedlings out to about 25cm (10in) apart. Keep them well-watered and well-weeded and you should have no problems
Think about the size of the 'finished articles' and imagine them standing side by side... that's how much space they will need (plus a tad more for elbow room). Beetroot would need less space and radishes even less.0 -
What do I do, just pull them out apart from the biggest & best looking? If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
