yes misskool is right - drainage is important if boxes don't have holes you need to make some or you will get soggy rootsLife itself is the most wonderful fairy tale - Hans Christian Andersen2012 savings:remortgage £156.15pcm £5 pcm insurance reduced; 2012 Running totals: £10 goodwill requests/Grocery Coupons £12:T0

Love the pic of 5 empty planters! Brilliant.
I find Strawberries do well in tubs. The fruit hangs down the side, avoiding contact with the soil and stops them rotting or going manky.0 -

But have you eaten any of that goosegrass? If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
You can get better drainage from pots if you keep them off the ground a tad.
This is a good way to recycle your winecorks
That'd be a great idea, if I drank wine. Fortunately, I have a couple of mates who're really, really good at it! :beer:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I think I need to change the thread title to "Help mrbadexample grow his dinner" or something, as I have questions that are not restricted to tubs.
For example, I have a competition running with my mate to see who can grow the biggest swede by Christmas.
Having only sown the seeds last Monday, in the "vegetable plot", it would appear that things are working - I have little weeny things growing. :j Edit: Technically, I think they're called "swedelings".
I'm reliably informed (by the seed packet) that swede do better with some lime added to the soil. As I didn't add any before I planted them , what's the best way to add some now? And in what form? I don't want to risk hurting the seedlings. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

It's for people who want to look trendy and healthy, a public display of "look how good I am".
You're right... lettuce has no place
It's quite pointless.
OK, growing ONE lettuce, if it could live the whole year and you just picked off 1-2 leaves as you wanted them (once every 2-3 months) then fine... but really, what IS lettuce for/about?0 -
I'd grow carrots. When I was a kid we grew all our own stuff and carrots are lovely. Boil them in water with a spoonful of sugar.... I have NEVER tasted carrots anything like our home grown ones ... and I miss that taste.
When I get a small garden I plan to grow carrots in tubs.0 -
Is there a preferred time of day to water stuff? If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

The carrots are sown. I'm just waiting now. It seems to take forever. :rolleyes:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
