How many parsnips is that? I might need to plant some more....mind you, I am growing very expensive parsnips. :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

is it too late to check you have drilled drainage holes at the bottom of the containers?

No...it's not too late, and it was something I was meaning to ask. :p

There are holes in the bottom of the containers but only one in each corner, no more than about 10mm. Added to that, when flat on the slabs, I'm not sure if they will drain well.

How much drainage do they need? I can always drill a few more if necessary....

They need enough drainage so not to be waterlogged. :D

Too many and they get dried out too much.

I drill as many as I feel like (so anything between 5-10, I'm trigger happy with the drill), cover it with some broken pots (or tiles or big rocks or anything hanging around), then a layer of clay soil (for added water retention) and then cover with a compost or more soil with blood, fish and bone.

I'll just have to keep an eye on them then, to make sure they don't turn into bogs. Mind you, if they do, I have some nice sundews & venus fly traps that I can plant instead. Not that they make good eating, though.

You can get better drainage from pots if you keep them off the ground a tad.

This is a good way to recycle your winecorks
  • mr badexample that looks really organised and very adequate - no haven't eaten any insects. SIL/family shop daily and eat what's cheap and on offer in stir fry's -they spend very little and eat small amounts of meat. They favour LIDL for fresh veg I am now shopping daily and it seems cheaper to me. They also grow things in containers like you that are expensive in shops (chillis mostly).
