Just an amazing amount of redcurrants this year, made some redcurrant vodka and the rest jam.
Backcurrants, this is a bad year and I almost lost a bush to aphids, it hung on but a severely reduced harvest, what we have will go to blackcurrant vodka, it's lovely. Still drinking stuff I made in 2006.
Logan/tay/bosenberry are all very full canes and providing the birds don't get them, should be lots of berries and yogurt/smoothies.
Not that many jostaberries either, but I'm thinking about moving them anyway as the rapidly expanding loganberry needs more space, I didn't realise it would grow this big!
The strawberries caught something and mostly died but the Marshmellos that did fruit were great and I am going to put some more in this year.
Rapberries are fantastic again, the glen prosen now into fruiting full time and a huge pot of them are coming in everyday, mostly eating them for breakfast, but I think in a day or so there are going to be too many for that.
The Joan J, we have had a few fruit off them, but they will be properly going next year. Tasted really good, nice full berries.
The green gooseberry bush is on the floor with a very heavy crop, almost ready.... but we have loads of jam already... so not sure what to do with them, we have made gooseberry vodka before, so maybe a bit of that, not sure what to do with the other few Kg's
Pax gooseberries, growing very slowly, this is their 2 full year and we've only got a very few fruits growing this year.
Made loads of rhubarb jam earlier on this year and lots of rhubarb, but it flowered like 15 times, so I think this year I will split it.
Haven't looked at the plum tree for ages, so fingers crossed.
Apples and pears, very few, but most of them only went in at the beginning of the year, with me taking most of the fruit off them. My mature apple tree, looks like another poor year, but the OH won't let me take it down as the chickens live under it
Mulberry tree in a pot, no fruit, but it's still alive and I class that as a result. Fig tree the same.
And..... my arguta kiwi has about 20 fruitlets on it

Blackcurrant vodka...hmmm
Is that a bit like sloe gin ?
How do you make it?0 -
My step dad is storing all of the strawberries and blackcurrants in the freezer for wine making. I think the spicy salad leaves are ready for picking but not sure how
(do I just cut the top half off and leave the rest to grow again?).
I have had quite a few flowers on my courgette plant but so far they have all been male so no fruit from that but I have about 5 cucumbers coming along nicely with more on the way, I am hoping that the cucumbers are a good size by the end of the week so we dont have to buy any more from the Supermaket this year.:cool:0 -
I keep looking at this thread and thinking "nothing"

But I'm wrong. The rhubarb (Timperley Early) has been smashing.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I've had Swiss Chard, Strawberries (well my kids have:mad: little monkeys are worse than the birds), Spinach and my first crop of MangeTout got harvested last night (only about 10 pods but its a start) i'm also expecting the first of my courgette's any day now... temped to cut them off now but they are still a tweenie bit on the small side. This months aim :- Stick to food Budget / find £100 for my car insuranceMay GC :- £250/£234.55 :T:A:TJune GC :- £150/£127.37:eek:0

Yep.Blackcurrant vodka...hmmm
Is that a bit like sloe gin ?
How do you make it?
Fill a jar to about 3/4 with fruit, add vodka and a good bit of sugar. Shake every day (if you remember, I never do) and leave as long as you can, at least 3 months they say.
But I've just left the last lot of sloes in the sloe gin for 1 and a half years to get that extra flavour
I know you can do it, as a friend left some in there for 6 years once and it was the best I have ever tasted, although we all were a bit worried before we tried it :rotfl:
So leave the fruit in as long as you want.
You can adjust the taste afterwards by adding more sugar solution.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
