Nothing beats a good rivalry at any level. My Saturday morning rivalry with George has been going some time now and is set to run and run - our PBs are now 19:18 and 19:18.....now the chances are that without the rivalry they wouldn't have been!

I whole heartedly agree Rich! What's the first tip you're given when you take up a new fitness regime? FIND A BUDDY, to spur each other on!

scorgeous that time sounds ok to me(what would I know lol). you might have a competitor for the mersey tunnel next year ;). Good luck with your sunday 10k

Yay, I hope so, I felt really lonely this year as I did it on my own. Hubby was at end waiting for me with dog, but isn't the same not knowing anyone who's running with you.

Still been churning out the slow miles, so not much to report from me really.

Some interesting discussion about competition. I always liked the saying "winning isn't everything, but losing is nothing". I've always been fairly competitive and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I think trying hard, setting and meeting goals etc. are to be encouraged. In running terms it means aiming to better yourself and improve your own performance, as only 1 person ever wins the race itself. I haven't won a race since my school days and then it was only fields of 8 (sprinting & middle distance). I now compete against myself, I want to push myself so that I am able to give a good account of myself. I'm the same with football, I don't mind losing to a good team, as long as I and my team have tried hard and given a good account of ourselves.

Telling kids that it's only the taking part that matters does nothing to prepare them for the real world, which is fiercely competitive. So set yourselves realistic goals; a new top distance or pace over a certain distance. Enjoy the feeling of hitting and beating these goals. Then set yourself a new goal, enter another race. You need this to keep you going, a lot of running is mental as well as physical. If you're out on a tough training run, picture yourself crossing the finish line in a race and let that image push you on. Competition isn't evil, it is an essential element of the human psyche.

Ahh the magic 4 mile :D

Its the point at which you get serious improvements in training - once you can run this as your shortest run you never go back to any less distance (except maybe the week before a marathon ;)) and you will improve dramatically just by running this every run because you have enough time to warm up the muscles and work hard before you have to sto again - its also the minimum distance for other types of training - fartlek, intervals, hill reps etc :D

    So yeah its good :D

Agree with this. I'm kind of nursing an injury, so doing lots of small, slow runs rather than really long or fast ones that might make my injury worse. Just keeping myself going really. But this week (including this morning) I have done 4 runs, all of them 7-8KM (4.5-5 miles), as 4 miles is the minimum I now get out of bed for :rotfl:

Or course, if you are just starting or coming back from a lengthy break/injury you have to build up to this distance first. Once you're there, you find that pushing out the distance gets easier. I'm not sure why, but I think it may be that it is around the distance when your body temperature and breathing gets regular and your body gets used to it? I may be talking utter rubbish though!

You're right Beertins - sure Rich will have some sciencey know how on it...although i've found as my distances have got longer the time needed to get into a run has got longer too - it was taking me 10 miles to get going pre-marathon - not sure I can even run 10 miles now  ;)

That will be my gf a week on sunday waiting at the finish with the dog :rotfl:. I'm doing all this on my own as I dont know any runners although i see plenty about. Thats whats making me nervous about the race the fact i have never done one and dont know what to expect or is expected.

Not yet, have just emailed Alan to see if he has set a date for it. I'm guessing either 30 May or 6 June. I know the BUPA 10000m is on 31 May which is bank hol monday, so have a feeling mersey T will be either the day before or like this year, the Sunday after

Well you know what you're capable of. You can run the distance, so just try to run your own race. You know you can do that, because you're done it in training!
