They're 4 years old, they want to win but that doesn't mean that they don't have any respect for their friends it's a bit of fun but this is where they start learning about trying their best and striving to do more.

I've told her you run as fast as you can and we'll be shouting for her at the top of our voices.

I'm very much of the thought that exercise should be fun and you find that in whatever suits you, whether that's running, athletics, rugby, football, dancing, swimming, sailing - just have a go at a variety and you'll find something you like and want to do more.

    Good for you!

Most of us never win races but it doesn't stop us striving to do the best we can - its a natural urge.

Trying to knock this urge out of kids at the developmental stage is just plain wrong to the point of being criminal. Suppressing a kid's natural drive to compete will jeopardise their whole future !!!!!!!

And more to the point, the 'fun' element of sport is doing the best you can and enjoying the sense of achievement, getting involved in rivalries, banter, doing better than you've done before etc...

If you listen to some people they seem to think that 'fun' has to mean doing everything with a smiley face, waving pom poms and not putting more than a token effort in.

  • I belong to the bannanas fan club too.

Its shocking what they do to kids. I am with you guys it should be about trying your best and respecting others. Thing is its not all the do-gooders fault look at all the diving and cheating going on in football that doesnt help much. Why on earth they think its better to drag them all down to the fat kids level rather than bring the fat kid upto the fitter kids level is beyond me. Winning does count but trying your best is better. I would rather finish last and have tried my best than finish first and not put much effort in.

    Spot on!

If you did win regularly you'd actually start looking around for events that you couldn't win so that you can improve some more - you actually want to be in the company of people who are better than you.

If you do win you want to know that it was in an environment where everyone was trying their best, otherwise what's the point?

So I'd rather be in a race getting slaughtered by Mo Farah than winning in some uncompetitive affair so you're dead right!

The do-gooders must have no concept of sport because they seem to think that it is damaging to kids to 'lose', presumably meaning not finishing first, so they take the 'winning' element out so as to take the 'losing' element out. Head, brick wall....arggghhhhh!!!!

Sombody needs coffee - its bit early for ranting isnt it? ;)

But I agree - for exmaple at my school I was terrible at running and always came last and everyone laughed at me - however, i was second in the school for gymnastics and the first was a UK national champion so it was great to have that kind of standard to look up to when training :D

Now I see how the Blackpool Marathon has been revived from the dead.

Its all about getting the costs of holding the event pared down. So instead of a 2 lap course requiring the closing of the entire sea front down to the South Shore, the 2010 event will head northwards up towards Fleetwood and inland on a 1 lap course taking in much quieter roads. Policing, road closure costs and bus timetable changes all much reduced.

On top of which a time limit of 5:30 has been introduced so there is a definitive road reopening time and also due to marshalling problems in past years for competitors taking longer than this - marshalls tended to drift off when the gaps get to the point where its not quite clear whether there's anyone still competing or not even with a sweeper vehicle in place.

Anyway, its all good to get in back on the calendar, along with the new Bradford marathon.:D:D

    Wow thats great :D

(I prefer a 1 lap course anway :)) does it mean no more of those annoying hills and less larger louts too?? I'm all for it if I dont get into London (and thats unlikely now since i haven't entered the ballot and chances of me getting down to 1:15 before xmas are tough) - hope they cant sort out the loos this year though ;)
  • Hey rich I did 8 miles yesterday would 4 or 6 be a good distance to run today?

    Thanks
