Hey rich I did 8 miles yesterday would 4 or 6 be a good distance to run today?

    Thanks

Thats easy to answer - whichever you feel like!:p

As long as its more than 4 just do what feels right. If you think of a distance and your immediate response is 'that sounds okay' then your body will most likely thank you for taking it out over that distance.

If, on the other hand, your immediate response is 'do I have to?' then you're probably better cutting the distance back a bit.

Now I couldn't get much vaguer than that could I?:p

    Wow thats great :D

(I prefer a 1 lap course anway :)) does it mean no more of those annoying hills and less larger louts too?? I'm all for it if I dont get into London (and thats unlikely now since i haven't entered the ballot and chances of me getting down to 1:15 before xmas are tough) - hope they cant sort out the loos this year though ;)

Yep and yep - less hills and less (or no) lager louts (or did you actually mean larger louts as oppose to the smaller variety;)).

Whats this 1:15 you mention? Shouldn't you be thinking of 1:30?

Oh right I am 1:30 - sorry dozy head this morning - just intaking some caffine to cure that hopefully :D

And yes lager louts - they kept offering me bacon sarines - I told them to wait till I was done but they were gone - disappointing :(

Also the time limit is good - are they doing the half as well? I htink they need to limit that because a lot of the slowbies were getting in the way of the marathon finishers which is a bit unfair for people who've run twice the distance - maybe a 2:30 limit would help - then its generous enough to not put people off but tough enough to not get any walkers...just a thought?

Think I will see how I feel at 4m mark as it will be the first time i have run consecutive days.

  • Morning guys :hello:

Nice to see a lively debate going on this early ;) So i think i'll chuck my tuppence in.

I have to admit as the token "fat kid" I have been on the receiving end of the softly-softly approach, and it was bloody awful to constantly be told to only try your best and winning doesn't matter! Of course it matters! It's like being told just before something thats already got you nervous "oh, well, don't worry, you won't win, and you'll look like a beached whale having some sort of fit for most of it, but atleast you'll have given it your best"

I have a brilliant mum who happens to be crazy competitive and always wanted me to be a ballerina and so has been a fantastic help and supported me through my weight loss attempts, but my dad is practically the president of the its-not-the-winning-its-the-taking-part-that-counts camp. He even used to go to the local key cutters and get me and my brother shields made up for sports day as he didn't want us to think only the best kids got awards!!! Like it's not bad enough to know you probably won't win anything, but your own parents actually EXPECT you to lose. How f***ed up is that??? So not only did we never win anything, but we were also the geeks with the dad who made his own prizes!

By high school the only motivation i had on sports day/cross country day was to beat two girls. TWO out of 150! #1 The rebel who actually smoked on the way round, and #2 the girl who was so fat she had to walk with crutches.

It's taken me 20 years to get my fighting spirit back, which is why i did the 10k, and you know what, it was my do-gooder father who told me not to bother, even on the morning of the race he made me miss my train coz he was trying to convince me that it didn't matter whether i did it or not, but that if i did, i'd probably have a heard attack coz i'm too fat to run  Charming guy eh?

Unfortunately my mum couldn't make it, but she knew i was covering 1k every 12 mins, so every 24 mins like clock work i got a mobile call, and it was her and her mates cheering me on from a restaurant lol. Now THATS encouragement!!! And it forced me to overtake 3 people in the last 800 metres!!!!

Kids need encouragement! And nothing is more encouraging than seeing your parents/friends cheering like loonies from the side lines. As they say "A LITTLE HEALTHY COMPETITION NEVER HURT ANYONE" Why shouldn't kids be allowed to experience achievement? If they work hard, they'll outperform others! It's not cruel, it's not harmful, it's Darwinian, survival of the fittest baby ;):p

Their gonna spend the next 40 years competeing for everthing!!! jobs, partners, houses, even supporting a football team is competitive! So why not let them get into the swing of things from birth, it's a whole lot harder to try and join in 20 years late, trust me, I'm doing it! lol

KYCU - In which case just concentrate on that aim, ie to run on consecutive days is the achievement so nothing else matters - no attempt to lift the speed or do incredible mileage. Just one foot in front of the other for no longer than it feels comfortable...and the new first has been achieved.

    Good luck.

Thanks Pink - neither of my parents are competitive when it comes to sporting stuff but believe that its important to do your best academically - so I grew up being told that it didnt matter I was rubbish at running because I was smart...

Not really the best way - but now they've had to eat their words and in fact step dad is a little jealous because hes never been able to run in races as he cant get the training regularly thing down to a habit ;)

    Great summary, Pink!

Now considering that we all seem to be on the same wavelength who exactly are these do-gooders? Where do they breed them? How do they get to thinking like that?

And whats more, I wonder why you never seem to hear a lively debate around this subject on tv - it would seem there is plenty strong feeling so that in itself is a bit odd!

    Morning everyone

I've got my 10k on Sunday morning, it says there are a few hills in it, but I'm hoping to maybe knock a minute off my mersey tunnel time, so I'm going for a time of 1 08. Does that sound reasonable to you experienced peeps?
