Probably because talking about exercise often leads to talk about obesity and then it becomes the us vs them debate about how people who are exercise are demons for suggesting that its fun - but the fact we have all shapes and sizes on here and we all enjoy a bit of competition proves it not about size - its about being your best (and not somebody else idea of what your best is) from hard work and dedication.

I dont htink you can ever beat that feeling of smashing a pb in a race or training run - theres been a lot of that on the thread recently and its great (plus now I have to crack a minute or two off my 10 mile time to get under KMS' :D)

    Morning everyone

I've got my 10k on Sunday morning, it says there are a few hills in it, but I'm hoping to maybe knock a minute off my mersey tunnel time, so I'm going for a time of 1 08. Does that sound reasonable to you experienced peeps?

You'll have an idea of the time you want to run, of course, but once you get into the race you should run at an 'effort level' that you know you can sustain.

For your aim, you should just do a repeat performance of the effort level you did in the previous 10K for the first 6-7K (note that it should be 'effort level' not time as the nature of courses vary so much along with the placing of km markers!) and then give what ever you've got left over the last 3K.

Both physically and psychologically you will get your best time by running a tempo run for the first two thirds and then giving everything you've got left over the last third.

Thanks Rich, that's brilliant advice. I shall give it a go.

  • Thanks rich & becky.

I feel like i am making progress and I have decide to switch from km to miles. I didnt run the full 8 because i got to 7.8 and was in front of my house so i ran in got a drink and walked up and down the street as a cool down :D. The GF lent me her car this week as mine had radiator trouble so she walked to work two days (takes her an hour or so) and she ended up with shinsplints. I really do have the 'bestest' GF ever :rotfl:

p.s. i cant walk to work it would take 2hrs+ and i would have to get up about 2am

Pink thanks for that summary and as my mum would say 'dont let the barstewards get you down' Although I really wish my parents had seen my youthful running potential all those years ago before i damaged myself with smoking, beer and fry ups ;).

scorgeous that time sounds ok to me(what would I know lol). you might have a competitor for the mersey tunnel next year ;). Good luck with your sunday 10k

Now considering that we all seem to be on the same wavelength who exactly are these do-gooders? Where do they breed them? How do they get to thinking like that?

And whats more, I wonder why you never seem to hear a lively debate around this subject on tv - it would seem there is plenty strong feeling so that in itself is a bit odd!

I agree with Becky, it always ends up being about obesity, but so what, obese people can still exercise and still be competitive, otherwise The Biggest Loser wouldn't be such a hit. This country has gone pc mad, and theres just no need for it! Whats the point of getting people like Kelly Holmes and Ricky Hatton to front things like Sport Relief if they don't want kids to be competitive? Why would we put in such a ridiculous bid for the 2012 olympics if it doesn't matter who wins????

    You're right.

It tends to always get defensive and irrational, but thats no reason to deliberately put in place policies that are designed to knock competitiveness out of kids and fuel the obesity problem.

Nothing beats a good rivalry at any level. My Saturday morning rivalry with George has been going some time now and is set to run and run - our PBs are now 19:18 and 19:18.....now the chances are that without the rivalry they wouldn't have been!

And I think the WAVA ratings are great for creating rivalries across the board. Everyone can now get competitive with everyone else in a fair way!

I ran 2.5 miles last night at 24.54mins which I was happy enough with. Going to maybe go for the 3.5 miler on Sunday which I am fairly confident I will complete!!

Ahh the magic 4 mile :D

Its the point at which you get serious improvements in training - once you can run this as your shortest run you never go back to any less distance (except maybe the week before a marathon ;)) and you will improve dramatically just by running this every run because you have enough time to warm up the muscles and work hard before you have to sto again - its also the minimum distance for other types of training - fartlek, intervals, hill reps etc :D

    So yeah its good :D
