Just to follow on from Simply's experience this morning:

Have you noticed how many of the slower runners in the London Marathon come to a sudden halt and grab their calves?

Its exactly the same thing - although usually in this case the depletion of essential salts is due to a woeful lack of training rather than prolonged hot weather as in Simply's case.

To be perfectly blunt, anybody thinking that they can run a marathon on 20-25 miles per week training is literally asking for this sort of painful experience.

You should have a bit more salt than normal. But you should still not exceed about 6 grams a day, even if you exercise a lot and it is hot.

Dehydration could also be the cause. I did a hilly 4 miler this morning. As an experiment, I weighed myself before and after. I had lost 1.6Kg, about 3.5 pounds. Assuming that weight loss is water, that means 1.6 litres (3 pints) of water. Judging my my sodden t-shirt (not breathable running top!) it was all water, too! It doesn't take much to get dehydrated in this weather. My run was relatively short and from approx 06:15-07:00 - a cool part of the day.

What time is everyone aiming for at the parkrun on Sat? I'm not expecting great things due to:

    a) The hot weather
    and
    b) I can feel the 4 consecutive days' running in my legs.

You might  but that is exactly what I've done recently :rotfl:. I've started using it on my meals since early June with the start of the warmer weather especially if I have run that day. I figure most of what we eat is OS cooking not processed and given the exertion I think I need it.

You're right krider - I'm very OS too and cook most meals from scratch, using very little salt, I eat virtually no processed food.

Becky - nuts and raisins are a staple snack for me. I just don't like the salted variety - looks like I'm going to have to retrain my tastebuds.

This has been a good (if painful) learning experience for me and it's far better to have this lesson now than mid-marathon. I thought that I was drinking plenty of water throughout the day but I obviously lose more than I thought when I run - don't know why that surprises me though because I certainly 'glow' at the end. My OH often moans that I'm dripping everywhere :rotfl:

You may be surprised, BT, you tend to run better in short races when you've had a few runs leading up to it rather than rest.

As for heat, it shouldnt make much difference in a 5K - last Saturday was a scorcher at Wimbledon and it didn't affect the results too much.

So target for this week is the same as last - sub 19 (as opposed to last week's 19:05) and still aiming to beat a certain race director, although that is still going to be a tough ask as he is consistently running around 18:30 at the moment.

I would think that Becky will be happy with dipping under 30:00 as the main aim will be to get round and record a time. That will represent a nice step back to fitness.

I never eat salt except on stuff like peanuts and I used to get very bad pins and needles (not enough salt)...

But remember if you are sweating a lot - I know I am - salt is needed as well as water - just stir some salt into squash and hey presto ready made sports drink :D

Thanks a lot, Rich! That's blown my preemptive excuses right out of the water! I haven't done a timed run in ages, but I suppose I'll be gunning for around 23 again.
