Oooo yes please
Got no races in that month either so it was looking a bit bare - cost?
Well done JP on the first contiuous 5k - its all upwards from here0 -
Its £16/£18 with a race limit of 2000.
Its along towpaths and roads but you're not allowed to push any fishermen into the Thames if you come across any!:p
70% of the field were under 90 minutes last year and 55% under 80 minutes so there is plenty competition to drag you through to a fast time.
Strangely though, only 3% of the field were under 60 minutes when I would have expected this course to have attracted a very competitive front end.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Well I was under 90 minutes in St Albans so its good to know even if I am slowish I wont be at the back
By October I'd expect to be down to about 1:20 ish so that should be good - I expect to not get a pb til St Albans next year but I'm always happy to have a crack at my favourite distance
Oh by the way do you have the elevation profile for next Sunday - is it scary??0 -
Morning everyone
Another first for me this morning and it's not a good one - it was the first time I've had to cut a run short and walk home
I set out for 6 miles and was going really well except for a slight tightening in my left calf. I've had this about a week and it usually eases off once I get into my run.
The conditions were perfect - cool breeze, slight drizzle and lots of nice people saying good morning. As I went up an incline at mile 2 I remember thinking that my calf was tighter than usual and I should post on here for some advice when I got back. Then it eased off and was fine until mile 4-5; this mile is an incline, followed by a railway bridge and then another incline. My calf started to really tighten up on this stretch and as I got to the top I had to cross the main road so speeded up, stepped up the kerb and 'OUCH!!' - a shooting pain up and down my left calf. It felt like something was going to pop or tear.
I couldn't put any weight on it so stopped and walked the mile and bit home. By the time I got home it was back to a dull ache again.
I managed 4.91 miles in 00:47:43 (09:43/mile) but am concerned about my calf which is still aching slightly.
So I'm after some advice please - what have I done? What do I need to do now?
I'm just shooting off to work but will be back on later.2021 MFW No.18 £9900/£10,000Mortgage at 21.07.20 £178,999 Mortgage today £150,8910 -

Nothing to worry about, Simply!!:D
If you walked on it afterwards you haven't done too much damage.
Did it go into spasm? I suspect it did from the way you have described it.
You'll find that its sore around the edges tomorrow and the Sunday but you'll be fine training on it as long as it loosens up enough to let you - if not, just wait until it does ease up.
The cause? Well its almost certainly the weather - a dwindling of certain essential salts in the blood stream through dehydration. The reaction of the muscle is just a protection mechanism.
It once happened to me during an interval session and I hit the ground as if I'd been shot it was so painful and sudden! But a 10 minute wait followed by some light jogging enabled me to race the next day.
So dont worry too much - it happens!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Thanks Rich that's reassuring - it was very painful and brought me to a total standstill for a moment. It might well have been a spasm as, apart from the dull ache, the pain came on very suddenly and shot up/down my calf. As you say, I don't think that I've done too much damage and it doesn't hurt at all when I'm sitting or walking slowly.
I'll rest it tomorrow and set out gently for my 16 miles on Sunday - if it hurts then I'll just stop and walk home.
Hmmmm, peanuts Becky?? No thanks. I might have to resort to putting some salt on my dinner.
Hope everyone else enjoys their running today - I'm off to drink loads of water2021 MFW No.18 £9900/£10,000Mortgage at 21.07.20 £178,999 Mortgage today £150,8910 -

You might  but that is exactly what I've done recently :rotfl:. I've started using it on my meals since early June with the start of the warmer weather especially if I have run that day. I figure most of what we eat is OS cooking not processed and given the exertion I think I need it.0
