KMS - Most of the deaths (at least 7, but could be 8 depending on this year's cause) have been attributed to heart failure.

But yes, water intoxication has been a problem and is caused by drinking too much water while, simultaneously, suppressing urination. This effectively causes internal drowning through dilution of salts within the body. It isnt a problem for faster runners though as the risk is directly correllated to the time spent running - slower runners can easily drink 3 times the volume of water that would be taken on board by an elite athlete.

This was a quote from the medical director from the Boston marathon:

"The message especially for slower runners, such as charity fundraisers, is awareness that over-hydration is more dangerous than dehydration," he said. "Such participants may need to decrease their drinking rate commensurate with their race pace."

He noted that runners who gain rather than lose weight during training or a race are over-hydrating and need to cut back on both water and sports-drink consumption.

  • Not sure if Ill be able to join in with this mainly becasue the posts that I have red everyone seems fairly serious about running.

Im looking to run to get fit but ruptured my left PCL in 2001. I still get some pain and instibility when running, especially on pavements round my way, so was looking for some advice really.

I'm currently doing 5 mins run with 1 minute rest between each for a total of 30 mins. Been out twice this week. However the pain im experiancing after is bearable but worrying.

    Can anyone help?

One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

But just remember that if you take too long there may be no ice cream left in South Shields, when I'm in spectator mode I can eat rather a lot.:p

Hello and welcome biggaz - you'll find peeps of all abilities on this thread. ;)

When I joined earlier this year Hypno, Becky and a few others were in training for the London Marathon and I felt quite intimidated by their achievements (especially as I was still trying to pluck up the courage to run outside). You'll find we're a friendly lot and there's lots of help and advice to be shared - no matter what stage you're at with your running there's always more to learn. :D:D

  • Simply - How does that feel then?

Three 10 milers in 3 days - and all at a faster pace than last week's 1/2 marathon which shows that the pace at Chippenham was NOT your true racing pace. You simply cant repeat race pace over distance on three consecutive days.

Therefore, the Chippenham race is well and truly consigned to the dustbin. You have proved that your 1/2 marathon pace is in the region of 9:30 or maybe even a little quicker when conditions are favourable. So 2:00 - 2:05 ish.:D

    All looking good!:D:D

    ..and spectators!!!!:p:p

Its much tougher spectating than running in these big events, the crowds are viscious - if I'm not back by Monday send in the search party.......:rotfl:
