I'm sure you'll have the right approach and have a healthy respect for the distance.....thats all that is needed in essence to motivate yourself to prepare sufficiently.
The problems start when people turn up on the day never having run further than 10 miles before and expecting it to all come right on the day somehow or those who have never done any races at all before the marathon or those that have run 15 miles per week etc etc....simply asking for trouble.
GPs are always sceptical, unless they're runners themselves of course:p, and tend to see marathons as a little excessive for most people. At the end of the day you dont need his/her permission just a clean MOT!:D:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Pickle, the fact that your talking here and training this far in advance is fantastic, I couldn't consider a marathon yet - you're amazing! Honestly, these are people that just turn up, Steve is being kind when he says 'they've only run 10 miles before' we've treated people who turn up to do the London marathon and haven't run since school! Not run at all!!! They have no idea!
Home now, don't feel like going out, 1 cup of coffee - then trainers on, after all, I'm only aiming for a lazy 10K - you marathon, 1/2 marathon and whateverelseathon folk are wearing me out!0 -

Wed 16/9 10 Miles 01:40:36 (10:02/mile)
Thurs 17/9 10 Miles Hilly 01:41:29 (10:08/mile)
That's the second of the weeks 10 milers completed - not the hilliest route I could have taken as I was aware that I have another 10 mile run scheduled for tomorrow but sufficient inclines to be challenging.
Pickle - I've been training for my first marathon (Abingdon) since February of this year. The most important things I have learned are that you need to keep getting out there consistently despite the dark, the rain and any other obstacles that nature throws at you and you need to enter races to gain the experience of how to run them. They are very different to training runs.
It's not easy fitting all the training in around life, I have taken to getting up and running at 05.30 to fit it in before work, and you will get very tired. Some things have to go and in my case it's primarily housework - I think once Abingdon is over I'll need to take a week off work to clean the house and catch up on the ironing. (on the other hand maybe not - I'll just learn to love the dust :rotfl:)
These aren't meant to be negative comments - I love running and have no intention of giving up any time soon - but I thought that you might find it helpful to have the thoughts of a fellow marathon novice.:D

It's really hard fitting in training, my housework is non existant just the dishes and bathroom and that's about the most I do during the week then try to catch up a bit at the weekend. Although saying that I'm not going out tonight as it's far to dark for me to be running on my own! But have a long run scheduled for tomorrow morning after dd goes to school and Tom is at childminder for an extra day so I can get out, I am limited to when I can run as dh leaves for work at 0600 so early mornings are not possible.0

The 'rest' week continues.:D:D
I went back to an old 'rather undulating' 4.5 mile route tonight which I only ever ran as a single loop and that was over 4 years ago.
Anyway, comfortably ran a course PB of 32:16 on the first loop and then broke it again with 31:32 on the second loop. Admittedly it was a very soft previous PB, but it is sometimes nice to look a bit further back to see the extent of the training improvement.:D
Simply - Consistently taking it all in your stride as per usual. I'm sure you'll tick the third 10 miler off without too much drama.
Evab - Enjoy your run in the morning.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I think I've caught up since Monday - this thread is so busy sometimes!
Simply - thankfully I made it back on Monday (just!) so didn't need a toilet stop out and about. Like your photos BTW.
Great start at the running club InaPickleAnd hope the training for the London Marathon goes well!
Hello again Hypno, and evab - glad things are panning out outside of the running.
Tuesday: 6 miles in 56:15 (9:21/mile)
Thursday: 5 miles in 48:58 (9:47/mile)
Total for the week = 17 miles
Aim is for 10 miles on Saturday for the LSR and then some 4 milers or something next week. I was planning to take this week easy but I've had a couple of weeks of tired legs and I needed to know if I could kick on as it were. Tuesday started out quite well so I decided to push it to prove to myself I can still up the pace and maintain it. I did take today steady though, aside from a slight speed up towards the end but it all felt quite easy still and my HR was lower so I wasn't working as hard.
Race pack arrived today :j0 -
Well done krider, exciting to get race details I've just thought mine should come through soon - scary!0

Well the week is all over, a nice day off tomorrow. Might pop out for a run.
Will look forward to sleeping in tomorrow, and not getting up at 4-45am..0
