    Bj - Couldnt agree more!

Having seen people collapsed at the 3 marathons I've been to this year - Blackpool, London and Fleetwood...it is definitely becoming very dangerous.

I wish people could see how these casualties look before they fall for the marketing, it would be a very revealing reality check. Seeing people who have literally turned blue and are uncontrollably shaking is a very unpleasant experience.

There were no deaths in the London Marathon in the first 10 years that it was run and yet this year's death was the 10th since 1991. And that is only those deaths that are officially classified as 'marathon deaths'. There have been others which have been questionable deaths, ie happened after the event but not close enough to be directly attributable.

And lets not forget that it isnt limited to marathons. With the great North Run being this weekend it is worth remembering that FOUR men died in the same race 4 years ago!

I do feel sorry for the St John's people - they seem to be completely overwhelmed...and it is all so avoidable.

Rich - I'm sure if Becky cycled behind you with a cattle prod you'd be sub 1:15 for a half ;) Can't think why she'd be happy doing that can you ;)

My first marathon was FLM back in 2007 via a charity spot, needed to raise £2000 but handily work donated £1500 and i got a further £700 from collegues at work.

OMG delete your post before she reads it and starts to get ideas!:p

To do 1:15 will need a 57 minute 10 miler so I'll be concentrating on the latter for the time being.....its a long time since I ran 10 miles at an average of 5:42/mile. But as we keep saying, you dont half get fit trying.......:D:D

That was a nifty way to get £2k together KMS. But I do wonder how many people know where the money actually goes.....it is certainly less than 20% that gets to the end cause and sometimes a good bit less!

    Thanks for the replies!

Hannah, I know. But we've only been away on a long weekend since March. Not much holiday this year, due to a job move. So I'm not going to feel guilty about it :p

red, thanks! The house stuff will probably be quite stressful, but it's an absolutely necessary investment!

rich, thanks. We'll leave Spain in the same state we found it for you.

  • I'm interested in getting one that will tell me how far I've gone and pace per mile first and foremost, and if I can get one with a heart rate monitor too then great! I was just wondering what peoples personal experiences / recommendations would be? I haven't got a big budget - OH already has the Garmin forerunner 305 which is a few years old now, so I think rather than spend loads he'd give me his and buy a new one himself as he's now doing more triathlons and he wants one he can use for that purpose
Good wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.
  • Pickle - your approach is spot on, the motivation of a marathon for your training will be brilliant. Just like the 10K is for me, little by comparisson, but with much shorter time frames - and I'm a slowbie!

Steve, deaths away from marathon site don't count! I can assure you the count is much higher, and St Johns try hard to get figures accounted differently - not a popular marketing move though!

Gonna try for a long slow run this evening, but I'm a bit achey from weight training last night.
  • I didnt realise that was the definition!

So, basically, if someone collapses and dies later in hospital it isnt counted?

In which case, I'm sure you're right...the death count is a lot higher. And it would seem you can almost count on fatalities in each race now.

To be fair, InaPickle, they should be discussed a lot more and, as St John's would clearly like, the realities of running a marathon on inadequate training should be more graphically illustrated.

There is, unfortunately, too much emphahsis on treating a marathon as 'a good laugh' or something which is 'easy', an image propagated by the tv coverage and marketing men.

The end result can, and often is, messy.

Use it as motivation to get yourself adequately trained and you'll be fine. Take away a lot of the unknowns by lining up on the start line knowing that you have done some 10K & 1/2 marathon races and several 20 mile training runs and you'll be full of confidence on the day.:D

I don't think I'll be considering it 'a laugh', per se. I might have a laugh afterwards, but I don't have any intentions of rocking up after a night larging it on Londow town stuffing my face full of curry... having said that, it's not daft to be aware that it is a major strain on the body either. I'm getting me knee checked out on Tuesday at the doctor's and after he picks himself off the floor at the idea of me running a marathon, I'll explain to him that even though I'm a novice runner, I've been doing a lot of reading and am aware that it's not just something you train for by doing a few laps round the park. I'll see what he says then. 'Good luck' is what I'm hoping for! ;)
