KYCU - Its up to you re the half marathon. Personally, I wouldnt advise anyone to tackle a half marathon until they've well and truly conquered the distance in training and gone well beyond (say 16-17 miles). Otherwise, it is just going to be a real grind on the day - a half marathon is hard enough when you're properly prepared, just ask Simply after Sunday's experience.

To enjoy races though it is far better to be ready and prepared for them.:D

KYCU - this is sound advice ;) I've run more than half marathon distance in training (up to 20 miles) and still struggled in the heat on Sunday. I've attempted two halfs now and not managed to complete them without a small amount of walking at around mile 12 - very frustrating. As Rich says some people will attempt them without being properly prepared but it is unlikely that they will truly enjoy the experience. :D:D

Rich - a nice relaxed run for you today then?

I did my 10K tonight but I decided to run with a friend who said she was regularly doing 5 miles on the treadmill. As it turned out it's actually 5K she does, not 5 miles and she hadn't done that for nearly 3 weeks so I ended up doing more walking than running cos I didn't want to leave her on her own

By the time I got back I ran the last mile from hers to mine but it was 7:15 and I was cold by then so I came in and got a shower.

At least I still did the distance I suppose:confused:

Was busy when i got home from work last night so being tired too i went to bed early and did the 4 mile recovery run this morning instead. Was meant to do 8 miles tonight but the legs were feeling tired and being i have a hilly marathon sunday i cut it short by 3 miles. Will go fo a wee bimble Friday instead.

Rich - Surely it should say London not Blackpool in your Week 1/33 bit? Also London is on the 25th not the 27th as that is a Tuesday according to my calendar ;) Isn't Blackpool the same day as London cos i make it 32 weeks until then inc this week as it is 33 for my Devon 100 plan which is the day before London.

  • Hannah, first 10K - exciting!!! Mine is 4th Oct, well, it's my second, but I walked some of it and threw a bit of a tantrum with myself at the end! We'll skip over that day!

You've more than covered the distance in training though, so enjoy!

Simply, I love looking at your progress, you're a bit faster than me, and run longer distances - so maybe you're my nemesis!

Did 6 miles last night, didn't clock exact time, but I'm sure it was around the hour mark, helped by it being dark and my route taking in a couple of parks with gangs of hoodies hanging out. nothing like a bit of fear to speed up your feet!
  • Whooo, my last 12 hour shift ends today at 6:30pm.

That will be the end of a 98 hour week in all, so not that good. Only managed the stated 8 miles on friday which was 69mins, so not too bad. Guess thats 6miles in about 50mins.

Ive not been out since friday, not been that well with a little stomach bug & pumping myself with imodium. Been imodium clear for 3 days now, and i think ive just come back to normal, or thats what the evidence said..

Lets see how it gets on today, then might consider a nice fast 3miler tomorrow or something on my day off to kick the legs back into life.

I'm impressed you managed anything at all working such a crazy number of hours and being ill. Well done! :T

  • Not having a great week (my body likes to conspire against me at times, I'm sure), but really wanted to run this morning so did... a whole mile! 10:23 which I was quite pleased with as it usually takes me a while to get going - legs felt good at least :j

OH MY GOD! I JUST GOT A LETTER FROM CANCER RESEARCH UK: I GOT A PLACE IN NEXT YEAR'S LONDON MARATHON!:j:eek::j

I'm gobsmacked. I don't know what to say. This is only the second time I've applied. I didn't think I would get it. Will I have enough time to train? This is mad! What will I do. Argh!

    *Breathes deeply*

Oh God, what have I got myself into?!

I'm so shocked I am actually crying.

InaPickle - Congratulations on sorting out your place.

However, there are always charity places available for London, even right up to the last minute. Cancer Research are not doing you any favours there; it is actually the exact opposite. They buy the places for £400 and effectively sell them on at £1500-£2000.

You are taking on not one but TWO huge challenges there...the marathon training and the charity fundraising. It is the difficulty of the latter that usually surprises people more than the actual running.

If you feel up to it, go for it. But have you applied through the ballot as well? If so, I'd wait to see the result of that before making any committment to a charity place..........

Btw Isnt it quiet on here this morning? Maybe something to do with the fact that Becky is actually doing some work this morning.:p

Alias - A 98 Hour Week!!! If you sleep 8 hours a day that only leaves 112 waking hours...so you were literally working every hour god sends. No wonder you didnt get much running done.

KMS - I'd only guessed at 33 weeks, I havent really sorted out a training schedule yet as I was actually supposed to be in a 4 week post-marathon rest period right now.:D Blackpool is actually 30 weeks away and that will be the target race unless London comes back into play through either a) A ballot place or b) A sub 1:15 1/2 marathon before the end of Jan.

Redsquirrel - At least with the legs feeling good it should leave you looking forward to your next outing.:D

Bj - Excellent running last night. It is that type of run that will develop the strength to get the 5K time below 30 mins, which I'm sure is not too far away now anyway!

:rotfl:Poor Becky, being picked on like that! ;)

Yes I have applied for an individual place as well, but the whole idea for me was rasining money for this particular charity, so I'm going to be running for charity one way or another. I'm doing this for my dad, who died of cancer last year. I don't think I would have the grit to do it, otherwise, but for some reason I've always had a lot of respect for marathon runners: I think it must be just about the hardest thing to do.

Since coming on the board I've been getting the impression that charity places prove a bit of a pain in the posterior for those of you who do it for a hobby as they take up places and seem to increase costs. I'm still learning about everything to do with running, so I've got to admit that's a surprise and something I'd never thought of in that way before. Still, since I'm going to the dark side for such a good reason, I hope you will all forgive me this once! ;)

As for raising the £2000 (if I don't get an individual place and that becomes the magic number), I'm hoping that the idea of seeing an overweight couch potato transform into a marathon runner will inspire even the most jaded of sponsors to dig deep. Heaven knows, that will be a massive transformation!
