Well what can I say? As an indication of how I'll do at Abingdon - I'm not sure I will!! A rethink might be on the cards
That was tough, it was so hot. I felt fine to about mile 10 and thought that I had controlled my pace quite nicely but then I began to really feel it and blew up again at mile 11 and had to walk for a while. Although I felt terrible for walking I was glad I did when I rounded a corner to see a female runner collapsed at the side of the road receiving attention with an ambulance approaching.
I ran the last mile but had to sit down as soon as I crossed the finish line as I thought I might pass out. I'm still feeling headachy and hot even now!
Rich/Becky - sorry to hear your races didn't work out either; it obviously wasn't meant to be our day!! What on earth is it doing being so hot at this time of year????
Oh yes, the good news - no chafing for me either :rotfl::rotfl:2021 MFW No.18 £9900/£10,000Mortgage at 21.07.20 £178,999 Mortgage today £150,8910 -
Sorry I forgot the other good bits (too busy feeling sorry for myself
)
All finishers got a banana and a goodie bag; the bag contained a bottle of Lucozade Sport, an oaty/nutty bar, two small bags of Haribo and a nice t-shirt (the wicking kind) that will come in handy for training.
It was also a very well organised race with encouraging and friendly Marshalls. There will be photos available later so I'll try my best to post a link when I can track them down.2021 MFW No.18 £9900/£10,000Mortgage at 21.07.20 £178,999 Mortgage today £150,8910 -
To be fair to yourself simpley you did a 18m last sunday then still got in 4 runs during the week.. then did your 1/2 ( and still at the same old simply pace )
seems fine if you ask me...
and OMG HARIBO!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats worth the 13.1Cabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0 -
Thanks Uk (sorry, didn't mean to post and run but I had to go and eat as OH had ordered curry!!
)
I understand what you're saying and I can do the distances in training but if I can't get round a half without walking what chance have I got of finishing a marathon??
I'm not being negative but trying to look at it realistically. I'm beginning to think it might be better to concentrate on 10k's and half's for now and leave the marathon until next year.
I think I need some advice from our resident guru2021 MFW No.18 £9900/£10,000Mortgage at 21.07.20 £178,999 Mortgage today £150,8910 -
Simply - From one who didnt complete a marathon today I can confirm that you really do need to feel ready to tackle a marathon when you're there standing on the start line.
For you, today was a bit of an oddity because of the heat - but you know you can complete a half marathon given reasonable conditions almost any day of the week.
What I would say is that if you're having doubts about getting around Abingdon change it to a 20 mile training run. That way you will have experienced up to the 20 mile mark in an actual marathon and will have more of a feel of what to expect when you go for the full distance.
It may well be that you actually feel good enough on the day to carry on and complete the whole thing.
The old fashioned way of doing things was far more sensible in that it was normal to enter marathons as if they were parkruns - the vast majority were used as 18-20 mile training runs, which is what you would do on a Sunday anyway. In that way when you ran a full marathon it was so routine there wasnt any unknowns until the last section.
However, its not so easy to do that nowadays with the combination of entry fees and lack of local marathons. But dont be afraid of using a marathon for your own purposes rather than thinking you have to complete the whole thing for the sake of it.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Thanks for those words of wisdom Rich; I wouldn't have thought about using it as a 20 mile training run. I feel better now :A
I must admit that because I run on my own all the time I find it very different in races - it would be nice to have some company on a training run for a change. As you say I can always carry on if I feel ok on the day.:D
It was funny today because it felt like a re-run of the Stur Half in that we seemed to be on one endless incline near the end of the race. My Garmin has recharged since my earlier post and a quick glance has shown that from miles 10 to 12 we climbed from 142' to 325'. So I didn't imagine it; but it does tell me that I need to make hill work a priority after Abindgon.2021 MFW No.18 £9900/£10,000Mortgage at 21.07.20 £178,999 Mortgage today £150,8910 -
I just think you did to much in the last 8 days to the run up...and you went out to fast in your 1/2 and it all just caught you out.
as you say you walked a mile and still got your normal time ( pace wise ) so I guess you would have been kicking about the 8.50 / 9 mile pace. which you can do its just that I think the 18m last week was still in your legs plus as you say the extra heat. ( whooo hooo roll on Athens )
my run was not the nicest I could still feel last weeks half. ( tight hamstrings )..
but only you know how you feel when you have done your 20's...Cabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0 -
Considering that marathon training is about taking out as many of the unknowns as possible it makes a lot of sense to run to the 20 mile point in an actual marathon in preparation.
Mental preparation, ie visualisation, is just as important as the physical stuff.
However, there is of course the practicalities of arranging your drop out point.
That was half the equation in my mind this morning - I wasnt exactly on my last legs but I had just got back to the start area so calling it a day at that point was very convenient.
Having just seen the results I may well have been tempted to carry on if I'd actually known I was running in 10th position at the time. There is no way of knowing in these joint 1/2 marathon/full marathon races.... I'm not even sure the leaders know unless someone tells them. Talking of which only 7 runners ducked under 3 hours which tells quite a story.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
