  • Hello all, can I join the club?

I'm quite new to running. At the start of the year I was the heaviest I've ever been and decided I needed to get fit. Started going to the gym in March regularly. Done this before but I have always fizzled out after some months. My favourite machine at the gym was always the treadmill, I overdid it though and gave myself shin splints, this was to become a pattern. Eventually recovered and decided to go for 5k run with my sister who was training for race for life and got shin splints again. Did my first parkrun in April loved it and exceeded my expectation by finishing under 30 mins (29:12), but got shin splints. After a few more attempts at running and getting shin splints decided I needed to follow a proper beginner's training plan which involved running and walking until I was able to run the full 5k. Started this in June and finished in August and been doing parkrun every few weeks since my times have been:

    01/08/09 24:39
    15/08/09 24:09
    29/08/09 23:02

It's now six months since i started exercising, lost 30lbs in that time. Also found a new hobby, totally addicted to running. Vaguely following a new training plan, running four days a week and building up my mileage. Doing the Bupa Great Capital Run tomorrow which will be my first proper race, hoping to do another good PB!

    Marathon morning is here again!:D:D

No idea what the weather is like as its still pitch black outside but hoping for cool and mildly breezy...at least until midday.

Really looking forward to this - cant wait to get on with it to see if theres been any improvement since April. And, of course, the main highlight of the day - the post race McFlurry.:p

This is possibly going to be the busiest day we've seen on here in terms of races and/or LSRs so its going to be fun seeing how everyone got on this evening.

    Good luck everyone...:D:D

  • Hey Mrssplinter - welcome! you're going great guns, and well done on the 30lbs. hannah and I are both great weight losers and running converts - so you're in good company.

Steve- ooh, can't wait for your report back later! Can we all have a McFlurry too - just to share in the celebrations?! (My goodness, how many calories in one of them, you probably should only get one if you've run a marathon!)

haven't run yet today - we've had a 'fridge packed up' moment. So had to sort that and about to take it back to shop. Run will have to be after lunch. Annoying, as I seem to do so much better in the morning.

    Have a great day everyone.

Hi [STRIKE]Mrs[/STRIKE] Mr Splinter and welcome!

I maybe running this evening but I'm working up at the pandemic flu anti viral centre this afternoon!
    ...Linda xx
It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.
  • Thanks for the welcome guys (it's Mr Splinter by the way :D). Finished the race. I was quite surprised as I was placed in the first wave of runners, so I positioned myself at the back. Ended up overtaking dozens and dozens of people throughout the race which was a bit annoying. Went round steady and pushed myself at the end for a sprint finish went through at about 23:06 but knew I was well under as finished a while after clock started.. Time according to chip was 22:03 which is a new PB by 59 secs. Gutted though as I secretly hoped to go under 22mins. Came 217th out of 1722. Anyway got my first medal :j. Now just got to sign up for next race, might have a go at a 10k! Also must do parkrun next weekend and try and get under 22mins.

Okay, so first the good news........there was no chafing!:p

No goody bags, no medals, no t-shirts.....but we did get a matching pair of DNFs to treasure.:D

It actually looked good this morning with nice cloud cover and it was hovering around 10c as we drove into Fleetwood. Set off feeling very relaxed and comfortable taking the first 5 miles very easily in 35:24 which was fine for the warm up.

However, the sun had burnt through almost from the start and the subsequent 5 miles splits were 36:36 (10 miles in 1:12:00) and 36:54 (15 miles in 1:48:54).

These splits should have been comfortably sub 34:00 so to see times drifting at such a relatively early point in the game indicated there was going to be a huge struggle to bring this one home.

I dont know whether it was the heat or the unrelenting hard sea front surfaces but there was certainly more heaviness in the thighs than there should have been at those sorts of speeds.

The bottom line was that I simply wasnt enjoying it and by the time I got to 16 miles I hadnt seen another marathon runner for 4 miles! It was only overtaking the odd runner from the 1/2 marathon plus the marshalls that gave any indication of a race.

Then between 16-17 miles after going past the 1/2 marathon finish I didnt see anyone else at all for the whole mile. So the prospect of setting out on another 9 mile loop, which was going to be an undoubted struggle, didnt seem at all appealling.

If a big time improvement was on the cards it would have been worth it but a 3:15 at the very best just didnt seem tantalising enough given the feeling in the thighs and the lack of any race atmosphere.

So liquids and ice cream seemed the order of the day instead.:D

Although, I was pondering while running how much grief the likes of RW must cause by trying to convince everyone that marathon running is easy.....:p It aint!

As Becky says though...it was a decent training run.

She'll be posting her own experience in a while.
