  • Wow KM - that is some distance, I'd half like to be able to do that sort of thing, and half err well not!

Planning to run tonight or tomorrow morning, no real plans as to distance, just see how I feel. Have foolishly agreed to go to a 'Pure Abs' class with some of my workmates next week so will be interesting to see [STRIKE]if I survive[/STRIKE] how well my muscles cope with that!

Good luck Rich, Becky, and anyone else racing this weekend.

I've been trying to figure out how many time I would have to run round a standard running track to have run 1 mile. According to t'interweb thee are 1,609.344 meters in a mile (1 mile = 1,609.344 meters). So that means you only have to run round a standard four times to run a mile, right?

Sorry, it's not that I can't do the maths, rather that my mental image of a mile was about ten times round the track. That's not bad at all! :)

Have you run around a running track? It's further round than it looks from the stands. Conversley, I find 1 mile isn't as far as I think (or used to think) it was in my head

And 4 laps of a track seems a lot further than 1 mile on the roads!

On the point of alcohol, is it just me or after a long run does anyone else need a beer? - its all I want after a long run (and i'm not usually a larger drinker!) Its the first thing I have- prob not sensible but even before water- that and a lion bar!

I do quite fancy I beer after a long run sometimes. Should be fine. Beer hydrates you in the short term and also gives you some energy back. Just make sure you switch to water after the first one. At least for a while!

The way it works is that you get water from the beer. So much so that much of it is passed through if you have a bit of a sesh. That's why you may need frequent loo visits with - how should I put this - little signs of dehydration! BUT the alcohol stays in your system for some time afterwards, dehydrating you slowly (hence the hangover headaches in the morning).

So a beer with a snack after a run is fine IMO. Just remember to switch to water! If you're feeling so knackered that you need to sit down/feel a bit light-headed, leave it out completely until you've recovered, though!

My team ended up making (but losing) the final yesterday, so it meant 5 games and 1 1/2 hours of 5-a-side footie. With no subs. For those of you who don't play, 5-a-side involves running continually. A mass Fartlek session, if you will!

So no run today again. And I can definitely feel the effect in my muscles, though I'm not in pain or anything.

Yes, that was kind of the point of me calculating it: one mile in my head sounds like half the distance from Manchester to London, but I can deal with the idea of four laps as I've run it before (slowly, on a very bad track), so if I think that I've already done it before, I could theoretically do it again! (Not for a few few weeks mind, as I'm blinking rusty, but one day. ;) )

Interesting. Strange how we all perceive things differently in our minds. Still, whatever helps you "get your head" round the distances must be good.

You'll be up to the distance soon enough. A patient approach is required. you'll soon wonder what all the fuss was about.

  • 100m World Record Broken by 8 year old Sarah

An 8 year old cheetah in Cincinatti has broken the 100m world record of 6.19secs by running 6.13secs on the 2nd run of 3 attempts on the 2001 previous record.

Since 8 year old is decidedly middle aged for a cheetah, its nice to see a vet smashing such a record ;)

You've all been quiet on here today - sunbathing by any chance?:p

Well, Sunday's weather forecast is looking a bit too much like today - the idea of running Spring and Autumn marathons is to get coolish conditions.

Who would have thought that entering two marathons, both on the Fylde coast, in April and September would result in two very warm sunny days?

Ah well, you pays your money and takes your chances - lets hope for some nice see breeze as there is no shaded areas on this course and not likely to be much shading from other runners with a strict entry limit of 250!

    5.gif5.gif Just 26,000 strides on Sunday...........................:D:D
